The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) is a free program that enables volunteers to assist low income, limited English-speaking, and disabled taxpayers with tax issues, tax preparation, and e-filing. This program is designed to help taxpayers with incomes under $52,000 and only very basic tax issues. Volunteers can offer assistance during any of the hours the site is open. Volunteers must pass an IRS exam on basic tax proficiency. Materials, exams, and software provided by IRS. An opportunity for tax training occurs in January of each year; online training is available year-long. The free tax assistance is available at the Downtown Public Library (8th & Dakota) during the following: Mondays (February-April 15th) and Saturdays (February only). The service is first-come, first-served.
