Overnight Sleep Study Companion

As a Sleep Study Companion, your volunteer time is directly impacting South Dakota Achieve’s Core Values; Financial Responsibility and Excellence. Sleep Study Companion will be assisting an adult with a disability who has limited care needs. Sleep Study Companions are critical in assisting SDA to ensure proper medical exams are facilitated and personal safety is maintained. More importantly, Sleep Study Companions provide a special friendship and reassurance to the person for a successful sleep study. Primary Responsibilities: 1. A Companion will use own vehicle to pick the person up to/from their home to sleep study. 2. A Companion will assist an adult with disability through all processes of an overnight sleep study. 3. A Companion will provide reassurance, conversation, and friendship, as well as facilitate a relaxing leisure game to the person through all sleep study procedures. 4. A Companion may be asked to provide assistance with ADL’s (dressing, toileting, etc). 5. Provide person a ride after sleep study and ensure paperwork is given to care team. Skills Needed: (What does a volunteer need to be able to do to be successful?) Required: · Needs to be able to be awake periodically throughout the night to help a person with all requests · Possess a current drivers license and vehicle insurance · Provide positive friendship and quality conversation · Be a liaison for Person with disability and Sleep Study Technologists · Excellent communication skills · Safe driving · Wear comfortable clothing to lounge in, bring own medications, toiletries, and leisure activity of choice Time Commitment: (Hours per week, length of commitment) 1. Sleep Studies are prescribed by a Doctor on an, as needed basis. 2. Sleep Study Companions will be notified of scheduled sleep studies and will be asked to assist as scheduled dates permit. 3. Sleep Study Companion’s are required to volunteer at least every 3rd sleep study or as often as possible. Sleep Study Times: 7:15pm- 8:00 am (8 hrs) · 7:15pm Arrive at person’s home to pick up, ensure person has all items needed and drive to sleep study · 8:00pm Arrive to sleep study location · 8pm-10pm Paperwork, orientation, and provide reassurance & companionship as Lab technologists begin testing procedures · 10pm-6am Rest, reassure person, assist as needed · 7:15am-8am Provide person with disability a ride, ensure paperwork is given to care team To volunteer express interest below.
