The Inn on Westport has South Dakota's first Rock Steady Boxing Program for Parkinson's Patients. Rock Steady Boxings offers boxing-inspired fitness classes to only people with Parkinson's Disease. Volunteers are needed to be "Cornerman" for our boxers/ fighters (Parkinson's patients) as they "fight" back against their disease. Our Cornerman volunteers will play a vital component of the exercise class by providing encouragement, helping motivate and push the boxers, and ensuring their safety during the workouts. Cornerman are paired with a boxer and will spend the class with this boxer, but will also interacting with all participants. Cornerman will help explain exercise modifications as needed, make sure the boxers are staying properly hydrated, and watch for signs of low blood pressure, dizziness, or overheating.
Cornerman must be:
- Compassionate
- Fully present in each class
- Good listeners
- Positive and great motivators.
Cornerman are needed at least 1x week for 2 hours but can volunteer up to 3 x week for 2 hour classes.
