Who We Are

The Rapid City Arts Council (RCAC) has been at the heart of Rapid City’s cultural and artistic growth since its incorporation as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in October 1968. Founded by artists and art supporters passionate about enriching the community, RCAC has evolved into a pivotal organization promoting cultural arts across Rapid City and surrounding areas.

The Rapid City flood marked one of the most devastating natural disasters in U.S. history. The arts became a beacon of hope during recovery, as local business leaders Arndt and Agnes Dahl donated $500,000 to establish a municipal arts center, commemorating flood victims and creating a lasting cultural resource. The Dahl Arts Center, which opened in 1974, quickly became the home for artistic expression, managed by RCAC on behalf of the city.

With over 50 years of service, RCAC continues to honor its founding mission to “expand the cultural and artistic resources” of Rapid City. Through strategic planning, partnerships, and community engagement, RCAC remains dedicated to fostering creativity, empowering artists, and enriching lives. The story of RCAC is a story of resilience, collaboration, and the enduring power of the arts to bring people together, inspire change, and build a vibrant cultural legacy.

What We Do

We champion the power of art to bring all kinds of people together, making art more accessible, more integral, and more inspiring for the communities we serve.
