Opportunity Details

AARP Tax-Aide

We are looking for a few volunteers to help others and fill some time during the winter months in Rapid City.  When you volunteer to help with the AARP Foundation Tax Aide Program, you will join a great group of enthusiastic volunteers who help people prepare and e-file their taxes for free.  You don’t have to be an accountant or even belong to AARP; we will provide the necessary training to allow you to do the job.  Volunteers assist at one of five Tax-Aide sites in the Rapid City area.

Our tax preparation season starts in mid January and continues through April 15.  All necessary tax preparation training is provided using IRS and AARP Foundation training materials.  No background in taxes or accounting is needed, some familiarity with computers is a plus.

There are two types of volunteers.  First, we need tax counselors to prepare tax returns for low to moderate income clients with emphasis on seniors. As indicated training will be provided in mid January in the applicable tax law and tax software.  We use a quality review system where all work is double checked for accuracy and completeness.

The second type of volunteer is as a client facilitator.  Again no background in taxes or accounting is required.  The facilitator greets clients as they arrive at the specific site, assures that the client has the needed documentation to complete the tax return, and directs the client to the first available tax Counselor.  As with the tax counselors we ask for a minimum of 4 hours each week during the tax season of mid January through April 15.  There will be a half day of facilitator training in January.

Each of the five Rapid City sites takes client appointments on a fixed schedule at the times when that specific site is open each week.  We ask that volunteers give a minimum of 4 hours each week during the tax season.  Specific schedules will be established once tax and software training is completed.  Training for first year volunteers is expected to take place the third week of January.

If you are available for only a part of the tax season we can still work with the scheduling to accommodate your schedule.

To volunteer, Express Interest below. For more information, call Dave Holbrook at (605) 877-4352.
