Community Action Poverty Simulation at Augustana University
We are hosting a Poverty Simulation at Augustana University on September 19th, from 6-9pm (volunteers arrive by 5:15pm) and on November 16th, from 2-5pm (volunteers arrive by 1:15). If you are able to volunteer, the materials are all provided for you, no preparation is needed. It is a great opportunity to work with students to help open their eyes to see the daily struggles of clients experiencing poverty.
To volunteer, express interest below. For more information call 605-310-2246
Poverty Simulation Information:
During the simulation, up to 80 participants role-play the lives of low-income families, including single parents, people with disabilities, and senior citizens on Social Security. The task of each family is to provide for food, shelter and other basic necessities during four 15-minute "weeks.” During this time, families interact with community resources. The community resources are tables around the room that the participants seek out. The volunteers run the resource tables. Each resource table has a packet that the volunteer uses for the simulation. Volunteers would recieve an instruction sheet via email ahead of time to review, and then we have a brief orientation prior to the simulation. At this time, volunteers can look through the packet...it is very straight forward and no prior experience with the simulation is needed.
The simulation runs for 3 hours, which includes a pre-briefing and a debriefing for the participants. We need volunteers to arrive at the times indicated above so they have time to orient to their roles, so the total time commitment would be about 4 hours.
Here is a video that explains the poverty simulation and what it is all about. https://www.youtube.com/watch?
