Make a Difference: Join Our Food Bank Family

Are you ready to help us tackle hunger in our community? Join us at our distribution center and play a key role in ensuring South Dakota families have the nourishment they need to reach their fullest potential. 

What You'll Do:

Your tasks may vary, but they’re all about putting food on the table! Shifts last up to 2 hours and may include:

BackPack Program
Help us pack nutritious food for kids in Sioux Falls! Work alongside fellow volunteers in an assembly line—some packing while others restock supplies. Together, we’ll make sure kids have the fuel they need to learn and grow.

Food Box Packing
Get involved in packing food boxes for our local seniors or for mobile distributions that support families. It’s a great way to connect with others while making a real impact in your community.

Bulk Food Processing
Join us in our bulk food room, where we take larger quantities and turn them into family-sized portions, including bulk produce. 

Food Sorting and Quality Assurance

As a volunteer, you’ll play a crucial role in sorting food donations or produce  to ensure they are safe for distribution. You’ll also help categorize items, making sure everything is ready for our school and wellness pantries.

Support and Training:

Please arrive at least 5 minutes early and dress in comfy layers with enclosed shoes. We’ll give you the scoop on your tasks and provide support throughout your shift.

For safety, all volunteers must be 11 years or older, and those under 14 should bring a parent or guardian to help out.

As a new school year begins, we're already preparing weekend food packs for kids across South Dakota, and we need your help packaging sunflower seeds for our Backpack Program.

You'll scoop, weigh, and seal individual bags of sunflower seeds that will be included in weekend food packs for children who may not have enough to eat when school is out. Every bag you package helps ensure a child has nutritious food to take home for the weekend.

9/11 Day of Service – with Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity

Date: Friday, September 11, 2026
Shifts Available:

Spearfish ReStore Project - 1:00 -3:00 PM

Join us for a meaningful day of impact as the Helpline Center partners with Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity for construction and ReStore projects in alignment with the National Day of Service and Remembrance.

Together, we’ll honor the legacy of 9/11 by turning a day of tragedy into a day of compassion and community action. Volunteers will help complete a range of projects that support Habitat's mission in the Black Hills. 

Join us at Riverside Park to advocate for the Missouri National Recreational River. Volunteers will staff the Friends of the MNRR booth alongside FOMNRR staff and National Park Service staff. At the booth, volunteers may manage t-shirt sales and donations, promote National Park Week activities, and share ways to get involved along the river. 

We will be cleaning up the park during the arts festival. We will empty trash cans, collect aluminum cans, wash tables and pick up trash throughout the park. Younger children can help alongside their adult volunteer.

You will meet for your shift immediately South of the Bob Tereshinski Baseball Field in Riverside Park.

Our mission is to help youth in our local communities. We want them to learn leadership through civic engagement. We promote youth activities, programs, and scholarships for those that volunteer through our opportunities.

Help raise awareness of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline across the Sioux Falls area by assisting with the distribution of promotional materials and community outreach activities during Suicide Prevention Month. All materials, instructions, and supplies will be provided prior to each activity.

Volunteers will provide rides for anyone using 6-seater golf carts, especially handicapped or elderly. Transportation will only be given throughout Riverboat Days event area. Instructions/training will be provided when volunteers check in at the information booth. 

Thank you for your interest in helping us make the 2026 Buddy Walk® come to life! Volunteers are an important part of making the Buddy Walk® a successful and memorable event for our families and community. We are looking for volunteers to help both during the week leading up to the Buddy Walk® and on the day of the event.

There are a variety of ways to help, from setting up and preparing materials to assisting with activities, welcoming families, and helping things run smoothly on Buddy Walk® day. Whether you can give a few hours or more of your time, we would be grateful to have you be part of the team!

Out at our Fullerton Farm (230 S. Ellsworth Rd, Box Elder), we'll have a celebration of the bountiful autumn season with food sampling, live animals, gardening tips, hands-on activities, food trucks & more!

Volunteers are needed to help with this event. There are lots of ways for you to assist:

Set-up Team (7 a.m. –10 a.m.): This team will help locate and set up tables, canopies, and deliver supplies to each booth.


Booth Team (9:30 a.m.–2 p.m.): This team will help operate/supervise booths and attractions. Booth activities include fruit tasting, vegetable tasting, blender bikes, assisting with crafts, ensuring the water stations are full, and serving as a greeter, among others.


Tear-down Team: (1:30 p.m.–3:30 p.m.): This team will tear down and return tables, canopies, and materials to designated locations. Actual tear-down begins at 2 p.m. but we ask this team to be present early to review the tasks needed for tear-down.

9/11 Day of Service – with Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity

Join us for a meaningful day of impact as the Helpline Center partners with Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity for construction and ReStore projects in alignment with the National Day of Service and Remembrance.

Our clients rely on local food resources, such as Feeding Brookings. We are looking for an individual who is willing to drive through Feeding Brookings (2030 3rd St) every Thursday at 3PM and pick up an avg of 5-7 boxes of food. It's an easy drive-through- we'll text you in the morning how many boxes we need, you'll let the organization know you're from Margo's Place and how many, and they'll load up your car with the boxes to be delivered to our shelter.

You'll feed families and impact your community in under an hour of your time. 

Do you write or speak another language? Margo's Place serves all walks of life - we are looking for any individual who is willing to translate our shelter and program documents, or is willing to be available to translate for clients. All languages accepted - a background check will be required for any direct client work. 

Make a difference in your community and join our Board of Directors! The Board of Directors provides governance, strategic leadership, and oversight to ensure Margo's Place fulfills its mission. Each member is eligible to serve two consecutive 3-year terms and will serve on a committee as needed.

We are seeking compassionate individuals to assist with crisis call coverage for the shelter. Calls will be forwarded to a provided phone during your scheduled shift. Responsibilities include answering calls, offering supportive listening, and helping connect callers to appropriate resources.

Training and ongoing staff support will be provided. A background check is required.

Opportunity
We are seeking a detail-oriented volunteer to assist with a variety of data entry tasks, which may include scanning and processing waivers, entering information from paper documents into a computer, and updating volunteer and opportunity information. This role supports our behind-the-scenes operations and helps keep our information accurate.

The Rapid City Youth Task Force is hosting the 12th Annual Glow Walk, downtown Rapid City to bring awareness & support for youth homelessness & runaway prevention. Hundreds of youth march downtown & wrap up at Mainstreet Square during Youth HOPE Month. Approximately 8 volunteers would be greatly appreciated to help hand out items to the youth participants, help ensure safe road crossings & general encouragement. The National Park Service and Friends of the Missouri National Recreational River need volunteers to help remove invasive and encroaching tree saplings from river islands along the Missouri River. Volunteers will travel by boat with park staff to Green Island or James River Island, where they will use loppers and shears to cut eastern red cedars and other unwanted woody vegetation.

This work can be physically strenuous, but it makes an immediate and meaningful difference. Removing these trees helps protect open island habitats, reduces competition with native plants, and supports the wildlife that depends on the Missouri River’s unique island ecosystems.

All necessary supplies will be provided, including gloves, loppers, shears, and life jackets for the boat ride. Along with giving back to the river, volunteers will have the opportunity to explore an island that is not easily accessible and enjoy time on the water.

Each outing can accommodate a group of up to 12 volunteers. Corporate groups, workplace teams, service clubs, and other organized groups are especially encouraged to participate.

Help us set up our booth at the Yankton Rodeo on Aug. 22nd, hand out purple ribbons, and help sell raffle tickets.

We are currently looking for volunteers to help deliver these meals and ensure they reach the seniors who rely on this service in the Box Elder area.
Time Commitment: Approximately 1–2 hours, once per month
Schedule: Deliveries take place on the first Tuesday morning of each month. The next delivery is August 4, 2026.

What to expect:
Volunteers will meet with Feeding South Dakota and me at a designated location in Box Elder to pick up the frozen meal boxes and a delivery route sheet.

Obtain a signature from each participant upon delivery.

This is a small time commitment that makes a meaningful difference—not only by providing nutritious meals, but also by offering a friendly visit and point of connection for the seniors we serve.

Inter-Lakes Community Action (located in Madison, South Dakota) partnered with Western South Dakota Community Action to expand the 60s Plus Dining Program to western South Dakota, helping fill the gap in areas where Meals on Wheels does not currently provide service. Our mission is to ensure that no senior goes hungry.
Our program provides monthly deliveries of frozen meals to adults age 60 and older living in Bennett, Dewey, Fall River, Meade, Perkins, and parts of Pennington County. Each meal box includes nutritious, fully prepared frozen meals (cooked in Madison and flash-frozen for freshness), along with milk, juice, and bread.

Join us in our Sort Room and Warehouse where you'll play a crucial role in picking and packing food for pantries in Sanford.

ICAP is seeking a small group of on-call volunteers to assist with preparing apartment units for new residents. Our 12-unit apartment complex on South 2nd Avenue houses participants in the Bright Futures, Heartland House, and Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program (YHDP). When a resident moves out, we occasionally need extra helping hands to quickly prepare the unit for the next household.
This volunteer opportunity is not a regular commitment but provides a meaningful way to support individuals and families as they transition into stable housing.

Volunteers are the heart of Neighborhood Soccer. Whether you’re coaching on the field, helping families register, serving lunch, distributing equipment, welcoming participants, or supporting site operations, your time and encouragement can have a lasting impact on a child’s life.

No soccer experience is required for many volunteer roles. What matters most is a willingness to build relationships, create positive experiences, and help children and families feel welcomed, valued, and supported.

By volunteering, you’ll help create a safe, fun, and inclusive environment where kids can grow in confidence, build friendships, and experience a strong sense of belonging.

We serve children in grades 2nd-5th in underserved neighborhoods by offering free soccer instruction, equipment, and a free hot lunch every Saturday, beginning Sept 12 and ending the end of October.

There are many flexible ways to support Neighborhood Soccer. Volunteers can drop in Saturday mornings to help serve lunch and clean up after soccer. Pumping up soccer balls is another flexible option. 

If you were to teach middle or high school, you would teach all sessions on a single morning/day or you may teach once a week for either three or six weeks, depending on the school. Programs vary but the key concepts teach about Financial Literacy, Work Readiness, and Entrepreneurship.

Every day, students and visitors to Southeast Technical College appreciate a friendly, helpful person willing to help them find their way.  As a Front Desk Volunteer, you'll be an important part of creating a welcoming first impression, connecting people to the information, services, and support they need.

What You'll Do

For many visitors, you may be the first person they meet at Southeast Tech. Whether it's a prospective student visiting campus for the first time or a community member attending an event, you'll help ensure they feel welcome from the moment they arrive.

Lasagna Love was started at the beginning of the pandemic when the founder of Good to Mama was looking for a way to help moms in her community. She and her toddler started making and delivering meals to families in the neighborhood who were struggling, whether that struggle was financial, emotional, or simply a feeling of overwhelm.
Lasagna Love has since grown into a national movement, with thousands of people all cooking and delivering meals to families in their communities. What we do is simple: feed families, spread kindness, and strengthen communities. Our mission is not only to help address the incredible rise in food insecurity among families but also to provide a simple act of love and kindness during a time full of uncertainty and stress.
Volunteers can sign up for a frequency that works for them, making a meal monthly, weekly, 3 times a week, etc. The volunteer would sign up on the website (lasagnalove.org), and then would be provided with a family's information to coordinate a date and time to deliver the meal. Minimal Time Commitment  

Every move is a little different but since March of 2008, when we started doing moves, we have developed a predictable and repeatable process:

Substitute volunteers are under no minimum hour obligation, they are added to a group message program in which we send out times that we need someone to 'fill in' if they can.

Volunteers walk alongside the horses while the participants ride during their lessons and offers support to the rider from the ground. Sidewalkers must be at least 14 years old, experience with horses is not necessary. The sidewalker helps the rider with grooming and tacking, and may be asked to help with mounting. During the lesson, they help the riders understand the tasks they are doing and offer encouragement, stimulation and support.

Volunteers lead the horses while the participants ride during their lessons. Leaders must be at least 14 years old and have knowledge and experience with horses. The leader may be asked to halter the horses, lead and tie, help tacking and pick out the horses' feet. During the lesson, they maintain control of the horse to help with the rider's lesson and ensure their safety.

Fun & Friends is inviting their families of ALL ages to their 2nd Annual All Family Picnic! This is a casual community event: families are encouraged to bring some lawn chairs or picnic blankets and just come out to enjoy the day! We'll have snacks, activities, and LOTS of space for families to gather, connect, and have some fun.

With the help of volunteers like you, we'll be offering: Tie-dying Fun & Friends shirts to take home! Bubbles and sidewalk chalk, Balloon art, Music to dance to, Face painting, Snack and drinks, Sensory tables & toys, and more to be announced!

The Furniture Mission is a faith-based organization providing gently used furniture to those in need free of charge. We also pick-up donations of furniture. We are seeking a warehouse volunteer who is comfortable loading furniture for families onsite. When an appointment arrives, they pick out their needed items and we load their trucks. Volunteers will be trained on moving furniture and use of equipment dollies for easier transporting. A comfortable home provides dignity, security and a better environment in which to raise a family. Owen's Outfitters is a new medical equipment lending library based in Sioux Falls, SD. We're looking for regular volunteers who can spare 1-2 hours a week to help manage donated durable medical equipment intake. Volunteers will help us sort out donations, clean and repair items as needed, prepare items for display and storage, and assist staff with equipment database management. Help Waypost bring vital resources directly to the community! We are seeking reliable Tabling & Community Advocates to represent us at local events, fairs, and outreach sites. You’ll play a hands-on role in setting up tabling displays, sharing educational materials with eventgoers, and spreading awareness about our mission.

What You'll Do:

Help transport and set up event materials (table, banner, brochures, and giveaways).

Act as a friendly point of contact for the public to learn more about Waypost.

Share advocacy information and connect community members with local support.

Helping come up with ideas and create our Yankton Riverboat Days float.

Our Family Connections rooms need an updated paint coat. We will be painting two entry ways, the bathroom, and two offices. This will be 14 years+. Shifts vary depending on your availability and family connections schedule.

Key Responsibilities:

The front desk volunteer will be responsible for greeting guests and answering phone calls.

Assist the NFAA Easton Yankton Archery Center with operations at the NFAA Outdoor National Field Championships & IFAA World Field Championships 2026. McCrossan Boys Ranch in Sioux Falls is a private non-profit organization that reaches out to troubled boys between the ages of 11 to 20 who have experienced conflict in their lives. By working on values, goals, education, and life skills, we prepare our boys to live a balanced life outside the Ranch.

Volunteers in the Visitor Center will sit at the front desk and greet guests, help keep the archive room tidy, and occasionally assist with tour and field trip groups. 

Hours for the Visitor Center are weekdays from 10am-4pm. Volunteers shifts can be from 1-4 hours, at your convenience.

Join us for any shift — or all of them! Each two-hour shift features a different decade of music to keep the energy going all day long. (If the shift is full, please join the waitlist!)

7:00 – 9:00 AM  •  The 70’s

10:00 AM – 12:00 PM  •  The 80’s (SHIFT IS FULL)

1:00 – 3:00 PM  •  The 80’s

4:00 – 6:00 PM  •  The 90’s

7:00 – 9:00 PM  •  The 00’s

Your Shift

Tasks may vary but they’re all about putting food on the table! Shifts last 2 hours and include time for complimentary snacks, tours, and mingling. Please arrive at least 5 minutes early to check in.

What to Wear

Dress in comfortable layers. Fully enclosed, closed-heel shoes are required. No Crocs or sandals permitted. If you purchased a Delivering Through the Decades t-shirt, we encourage you to wear it while volunteering.

Age Requirements

All volunteers must be 11 years or older. Volunteers under 14 need a parent or guardian to participate.
