Volunteer: Invasive Plant Removal on the MNRRThe National Park Service and Friends of the Missouri National Recreational River need volunteers to help remove invasive and encroaching tree saplings from river islands along the Missouri River. Volunteers will travel by boat with park staff to Green Island or James River Island, where they will use loppers and shears to cut eastern red cedars and other unwanted woody vegetation. This work can be physically strenuous, but it makes an immediate and meaningful difference. Removing these trees helps protect open island habitats, reduces competition with native plants, and supports the wildlife that depends on the Missouri River’s unique island ecosystems. All necessary supplies will be provided, including gloves, loppers, shears, and life jackets for the boat ride. Along with giving back to the river, volunteers will have the opportunity to explore an island that is not easily accessible and enjoy time on the water. Each outing can accommodate a group of up to 12 volunteers. Corporate groups, workplace teams, service clubs, and other organized groups are especially encouraged to participate.
