Opportunities From: Helpline Center Volunteer Connections

The Helpline Center is gearing up for 988 Day on Monday, September 8, and we’d love your help spreading awareness about the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Here are a few ways you can get involved:

Yard Sign Delivery

Help deliver 988 yard signs to interested homeowners, businesses, and neighborhoods.

We’ll also need 6–8 volunteers on Thursday, September 4 to deliver and set up signs at all Scooter’s Coffee locations in Sioux Falls, Brandon, and Tea.

T-Shirt Giveaway

We need 4 volunteers on Monday, September 8, from 7–8 a.m. to hand out free 988 t-shirts at Scooter’s locations in Sioux Falls.

Social Media Awareness

Join us in wearing a free 988 t-shirt on 988 Day (Sept. 8) and post a picture on social media, tagging the Helpline Center.

Every small effort helps spread the word that 988 is here to offer hope and support.

The Helpline Center’s Substance Use Care Coordination Program is seeking volunteers to assist with the distribution of medication lockboxes. These lockboxes are an important tool in preventing misuse and promoting safe storage of prescription medications in local households.

Role:

Responsibilities:

Check lockbox inventory and inspect for damage

Verify recipient details (name, address, contact)

Prepare lockboxes with program materials

Package and label boxes for mailing

Details:

All materials and instructions provided

Work is detail-oriented and organized

Care Coordination Specialist will handle final mailing

The mission of the Helpline Center is making lives better by giving support, offering hope and creating connections all day, every day. One of the primary ways we do this is through our community resource, childcare providers, and volunteer connections databases. Help keep the three Helpline Center databases up to date by connecting with agencies and providers to verify resource information.

Responsibilities:

Make phone calls to agencies encouraging them to update their information

Conduct outreach to potential agencies based on a prospect list

Enter updates into databases as applicable

Must be comfortable with phone interaction

Impact: Your efforts ensure that community members, families, and volunteers can access accurate, reliable information when they need it most.

There are many ways to get involved as a group to support the Helpline Center's mission every day.

Community Influencers: Use personal or professional networks to promote events, share campaigns, or recruit attendees and donors. Distribute brochures, flyers, or promote programs/events at coffee shops, libraries, and community centers.

Maintenance Support: Rally a team of volunteers to complete indoor and outdoor maintenance projects that keep the Helpline Center running smoothly and looking its best.

Special Events: Be part of our signature events like the Step Forward Walk and the Spirit of Volunteerism Breakfast. Roles may include event setup, registration, hospitality, and more.

Corporate Packing Events: Gather your co-workers and join in assembling care kits and other needed items.

Caring Cards: Create uplifting cards for Helpline Center staff or to be included with 988 journals.

Staff Support: Show some love to Helpline Center staff. The work they do is often stressful, so an act of kindness goes a long way! Buy or cook a meal for staff, deliver baked goods or flowers, or dream up another way to show your support.

Help Us Package with Purpose!

We’re looking for detail-oriented volunteers to help us fulfill community requests by counting and packaging items for Suicide Preventions Month this September. Volunteers would come in twice a week for about 2 hours (give or take!) during August and September. We’ll have everything ready for you, including printed request lists to check off as you go and clear instructions for how each package should be assembled. If you love organizing, checking things off lists, and making a tangible difference, we’d love to have you join us!

Use your marketing and development skills to support the work of the Helpline Center. Examples include but are not limited to staffing booths, grant support, content writing, photography, or any other skills you would like to share. Interview and background check required.

Together, we’ll honor the legacy of 9/11 by turning a day of tragedy into a day of compassion and community action. Volunteers will help complete a range of projects that support local residents in remaining safely and comfortably in their homes.
