Key Responsibilities:

What to Wear:
Our distributions take place outdoors, so please dress for whatever South Dakota weather decides to throw our way! Layers and comfortable clothing are always a good idea.
For safety, closed-toe, closed-heel shoes are required—your whole foot must be covered. No Crocs, sandals, Keen sandals, etc. If someone arrives without the right footwear, we’ll kindly ask them to change shoes or join us another time.

Qualifications:

Keep Clean Downtown Brookings is a volunteer effort to remove litter in the Downtown Brookings neighborhood. Anyone can volunteer, including all ages and group sizes, during most daylight hours, seven days a week. Year-round opportunities are available, but depend on the weather and temperature. All supplies and instructions will be provided at the event - just bring yourself and a friend or two!

Volunteers must complete a waiver before volunteering. Waivers will be sent in advance or completed on-site. If under 18, parents must sign the waiver and an adult must accompany them during cleanup.

Center of Hope Free Evening Clinic is available for uninsured individuals and families every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 6:00pm to 8:30pm. Another clinic night may be added due to the increased patient load we have been experiencing this past year (to be determined at a later date). Medical staff (e.g. Registered Nurses, Providers, etc.) are needed to keep the clinic open to the public. Music Sing-a-longs, and Musicians Wanted

LifeScape’s Mission is Empowering people to live their best life.  Music is very empowering and we invite you to share your musical talents at LifeScape!  No experience or musical expertise required, all voices are beautiful!  Let’s sing together! 

Bring a small (2-3 people) or large group (3-15people) of friends to LifeScape to create a time of music and memories by singing holiday favorites and everyday favorites. We welcome acapella voices and/or musical accompaniment (bells, recordings, speakers, guitars, etc) as you share the classical kid, karoke fun songs, and/or religious songs.

Volunteer in a variety of ways to support seniors at Avera Prince of Peace. 

In School Mentoring volunteers spend one hour per week with an elementary or middle school student at the school. Mentors and students spend time doing a variety of activities together, including:

playing board games
reading a book
playing basketball
eating lunch together
simply sitting and talking

In School Mentoring offers a flexible volunteer option. With schools located in nearly every neighborhood, mentors can select a location that is best for them. Matches meet during the school lunch hour. The time varies from school to school, but it’s generally a 30 to 45 minute block of time between 11am and 1pm.

School counselors select a young person who can use extra one-to-one attention from a caring adult role model. Counselors are responsible for matching students with an In School mentor.

This essential program helps us support around 12,000 families across the state each month. What to Wear:

Since distributions are held outdoors, please dress appropriately for all types of weather conditions. Wear comfortable, layered clothing and fully enclosed shoes—no crocs, sandals, or open-toed footwear. If you arrive in inappropriate shoes, we will kindly ask you to change before volunteering.

S.T.A.R.S. is looking for compassionate, dependable volunteers to support riders during our 2026 summer sessions in Brookings!

Next Orientation/Training        May 26, 27, 28  5:30-7:30 PM

No horse experience required — training is provided. Volunteers help with grooming and leading horses, assisting riders during lessons, and creating a safe, encouraging environment for individuals with disabilities to thrive.

Designers: Scenic, Lighting, Costume, Hair & Makeup, Props, & Sound
Starting from the text of the play and initial discussions with the director, designers build the visual world of the show. Through production meetings, rehearsal reports, and conversations with the directing team, designers create sets, lighting, costumes, props, and sound that serves the needs of the actors, the vision of the director, and the intent of the author. While BHCT has a good amount of items in stock, designers are also given a budget to purchase items or buy supplies to construct items. Time commitment and complexity of design is dictated by the script. Designers are supported by the Technical Director, the Costume Shop Manager, and the Artistic Director. ​

​ Directors
BHCT relies heavily on our directors for the organization and execution of each individual production. We ask directors new to the mainstage to first work with us as an Assistant Director or as a Reading Director. All directors are responsible for casting, coaching actors, and, in the case of the mainstage, overseeing that the work of the whole production team is cohesive and supports the story of the script. Assistant Directors may be tasked with overseeing specific areas of the production in line with their experience and interest. Reading Directors are asked to focus on the interpretation and acting of the text as the readings intentionally have limited tech. All directors are supported by the Artistic Director.

Stage Manager / Assistant Stage Manager
The Stage Manager assists the director by ensuring communication, organization, and safety for the whole production team. The Stage Manager is the first person to arrive and the last person to leave every rehearsal and performance. The Stage Manager is also responsible for running the board from the booth during performances. A good stage manager will be organized, intuitive, and an excellent communicator. The Assistant Stage Manager is the stage manager’s eyes and ears backstage and on the deck during performance. They may also assist in rehearsals as needed. All Stage Managers are supported by the Artistic Director.

Music Director
Music directors assist with casting for musicals, provide vocal coaching to actors, recruit musicians, and conduct the live band during musical performances.
*The Music Director can be split into two roles – Vocal Director and Conductor.

Choreographer
​Choreographers create the movement for a production. For our musicals, that means choreographing dance numbers and teaching them to actors. Choreographers should be ready to adapt their ideas to suit the wide variety of experiences and abilities of BHCT actors and be excellent teachers.

Dramaturgs
Dramaturgs provide the relevant research for directors, designers, and actors to fully understand and interpret the world of the play.

Lasagna Love was started at the beginning of the pandemic when the founder of Good to Mama was looking for a way to help moms in her community. She and her toddler started making and delivering meals to families in the neighborhood who were struggling, whether that struggle was financial, emotional, or simply a feeling of overwhelm.
Lasagna Love has since grown into a national movement, with thousands of people all cooking and delivering meals to families in their communities. What we do is simple: feed families, spread kindness, and strengthen communities. Our mission is not only to help address the incredible rise in food insecurity among families but also to provide a simple act of love and kindness during a time full of uncertainty and stress.
Volunteers can sign up for a frequency that works for them, making a meal monthly, weekly, 3 times a week, etc. The volunteer would sign up on the website (lasagnalove.org), and then would be provided with a family's information to coordinate a date and time to deliver the meal. Behind every great nursing home is a team of dedicated volunteers keeping things running smoothly! As a Receipt Logger, you'll help our staff by organizing and recording Hy-Vee receipts on an Excel spreadsheet. This is an ideal role for detail-oriented individuals who would like to contribute their organizational skills to support our residents and staff behind the scenes.

As a Musician or Entertainer volunteer, you'll bring joy, laughter, and a little bit of magic to our community by performing for our residents. Music and entertainment have a powerful way of lifting spirits and sparking cherished memories, making this one of the most impactful ways you can give back. Solo acts, duets, and groups are all welcome — we'd love to have you on our stage!

Who: Outgoing Pavilion volunteers 16 and older who enjoy engaging with guests, especially kiddos

What: Leading interactive, STEAM (Science, Technology, Education, Arts, and Math)-focused activities. Plans and supplies will be provided by the Pavilion's Education office 

Where: The Jack's Imagination Lab inside the Kirby Science Discovery Center and/or the Children's Studio inside the Visual Arts Center - the venue is up to you!

When: Times on weekends are flexible. Ideally, we would love for volunteers to join us for a three-hour session at the following times:

- Between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm on Saturdays

- Between 12:00 and 5:00 pm on Sundays

The Sioux Falls office is currently looking for volunteers. Birthright welcomes volunteers who believe firmly in the Birthright philosophy and have a sincere desire to help pregnant women. Providing emotional support and practical help to women is always the first priority of Birthright volunteers. Volunteers handle a variety of phone calls, including those from girls and women who are overwhelmed about being pregnant or fear they may be pregnant. Volunteers also help women who come to the office, whether for a free pregnancy test, referrals and information or for a welcoming friend. Some volunteers choose to help in other ways, such as sorting maternity and baby clothes, cleaning the office or helping with presentations to school and community groups about Birthright and its services.
