Opportunities From: Helpline Center Volunteer Connections

If you were to teach middle or high school, you would teach all sessions on a single morning/day or you may teach once a week for either three or six weeks, depending on the school. Programs vary but the key concepts teach about Financial Literacy, Work Readiness, and Entrepreneurship.    

JA Finance Park® is an immersive experience for middle and high school students to learn how to meet their financial goals while living within their means. Students participate in teacher-led lessons that culminate in an in person simulation experience. During this one-day (5-hour) experience, volunteers share their life experiences and coach students on topics related to their monthly budgeting decisions.    

As an elementary volunteer, you would coordinate directly with the teacher to find five (30-45 minute) sessions between November and March. Each grade level has a unique curriculum with various concepts centered on work readiness, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship. 

To provide compassionate, non-medical support to individuals aged 62 and older, helping them maintain dignity, independence, and quality of life in their own homes. This may include chore services like cleaning, cooking, yard maintenance, driving to and from appointments or grocery store, and overall companionship. Weekly visits,  on average 1-2.5 hours each.

The Helpline Center is gearing up for 988 Day on Monday, September 8, and we’d love your help spreading awareness about the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Here are a few ways you can get involved:

Yard Sign Delivery

Help deliver 988 yard signs to interested homeowners, businesses, and neighborhoods.

We’ll also need 6–8 volunteers on Thursday, September 4 to deliver and set up signs at all Scooter’s Coffee locations in Sioux Falls, Brandon, and Tea.

T-Shirt Giveaway

We need 4 volunteers on Monday, September 8, from 7–8 a.m. to hand out free 988 t-shirts at Scooter’s locations in Sioux Falls.

Social Media Awareness

Join us in wearing a free 988 t-shirt on 988 Day (Sept. 8) and post a picture on social media, tagging the Helpline Center.

Help your neighbors in need today by volunteering to distribute boxes and bags of food to those who need a little extra food assistance.

Key Responsibilities:

Volunteers will be given instructions and training upon arrival and will have staff support and supervision throughout their shift. 

What to wear:

Distributions are held outside, please dress accordingly for all types of weather. Wear comfortable clothing in layers. Closed-toe/closed-heel shoes are required, 100% of the foot must be covered. No crocks, sandals, Keen sandals, etc. If you arrive not wearing appropriate footwear, we will kindly ask that you leave and change shoes or volunteer with us another time.

This position may be working outdoors in a parking lot around vehicle traffic. For safety reasons, all volunteers must be 11 years or older. Volunteers under 14 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

Lasagna Love has since grown into a national movement, with thousands of people all cooking and delivering meals to families in their communities. What we do is simple: feed families, spread kindness, and strengthen communities. Our mission is not only to help address the incredible rise in food insecurity among families but also to provide a simple act of love and kindness during a time full of uncertainty and stress.

What: Assist the Spotlight Theatre Company, the Washington Pavilion’s in-house youth theatre program, in putting on its multiple fully staged productions each year. Volunteers can assist in the following capacities:

Requesting Visual Arts Center Greeters & Guides

Who: Requesting volunteers 16 and older
What: Serving as a Visual Arts Center (VAC) Entrance Desk Greeter and leading tours of the galleries as requested by guests and/or scheduled by groups visiting the museum

Where: At the VAC entrance desk inside the Washington Pavilion

Training: Plenty of training provided by Museums staff and fellow volunteers - no prior art expertise necessary!
When: Volunteers usually serve on a set day of the week for a three-hour session between the museum hours of 10:00 am and 5:00 pm.

Why: Museum guests appreciate a friendly face and welcoming presence upon their arrival at the VAC. Volunteer-led tours of the exhibits on display are often the favorite part of guests' visits to the Pavilion!

Requesting Performance Ushers

Who: Requesting friendly volunteers 14 and older who are comfortable with stairs, dark spaces, reading tickets, standing for periods of time, and operating ticket scanners

What: Serving as an usher for Washington Pavilion performances, including Broadway shows, the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, big-name artists, local group performances, comedians, and more!

Where: At the Washington Pavilion and Orpheum Theater, both in downtown Sioux Falls

When: Ushers serve on a season-by-season basis. The Pavilion staff loves to have volunteers join them for at least three performances each month

Why: Ushers play a critical role in maximizing the Pavilion guest experience and provide invaluable services by taking tickets, assisting guests to their seats, answering questions, and creating a pleasant and welcoming environment for all. Ushers get to meet lots of new people and experience quality performances

Requesting Summer Camp Volunteers

Who: Requesting volunteers 13 and older

What: Volunteering as a Pavilion camps assistant, acting as the camp instructor's second set of eyes, ears, and helping hands for the 90+ art-, science-, and performing arts-focused camps the Pavilion hosts each summer

Where: Camps happen in various locations inside the Washington Pavilion

When: Camps are one-week offerings (two-week runs for music theatre camps) Monday-Thursday from 8:30 am-12:00 pm and/or 1:00-4:30 pm between early June and early August. Volunteers are asked to sign up and be present for each day of a camp

Why: Volunteers get to explore the many exciting areas of art, science, and theatre while serving as a positive role model and mentor to younger peers

Requesting Kirby Science Discovery Center (KSDC) Volunteers

Who: Requesting volunteers 13 and older
What: Volunteering in the KSDC. Volunteers can:

- Oversee the floors, clean/sanitize exhibits & surfaces as needed, and make sure exhibits are looking good and working well

- Lead fun activities for children and families  in the Jack’s Imagination Lab and the Children's Studio (inside the Visual Arts Center)

Plenty of on-site training provided by Pavilion Museums staff!
Where: In and around the KSDC, located inside the Pavilion
When: Times are flexible. Volunteers often serve once or twice per week in three-hour sessions between the museum hours of 10:00 am and 5:00 pm Tuesday through Sunday
Why: Volunteers help provide first-class museum experiences for the 120,000 guests who annually visit the KSDC

Requesting Field Trip Volunteers

Who: Requesting volunteers 16+ with good mobility who enjoy working with elementary- and middle school-aged students in large groups

What: Assist the Pavilion's Museum staff in hosting educational field trips for area students. Volunteers can serve in the following capacities:

- As Field Trip Assistants: greet students, their teachers, and chaperones upon arrival, distribute itineraries, direct groups to their destinations, and help move sack lunches (with rolling Pavilion bins) to the 3rd-floor lobby

- As Museum Floor Volunteers: supervise the Science Center floors, reset exhibits, answer questions from groups, and direct groups to the locations of their next stops during their visits

Where: In and around the Pavilion’s museums and lobbies

When: 9:00 am-12:00 pm and/or 11:00-2:00 pm on weekdays in April and May. Volunteers may be scheduled on a certain day or days of the week or on an as-needed basis when the Pavilion knows it will be hosting lots of groups

Why: Volunteers help provide first-class experiences for the thousands of students who visit the Pavilion on field trips each spring

Who: Requesting friendly, outgoing volunteers ages 16+ with good mobility who enjoy history and public speaking
What: Leading tours of the Washington Pavilion, which is housed in the beautifully renovated former Washington High School. Tour itineraries and topics adjust depending on the audience, be that Washington High School alumni, local students, or visitors to Sioux Falls
Where: Inside the Washington Pavilion, especially its performance spaces and museums
When: Tours are scheduled through the Pavilion's sales office. Volunteers are requested to lead tours based on when groups schedule their visit
Why: The building is the site of "Old Washington High," which educated tens of thousands of Sioux Falls families for nearly a century and is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Building tour guides help ensure the legacy and bring to life the history of this one-of-a-kind facility!

The Helpline Center’s Substance Use Care Coordination Program is seeking volunteers to assist with the distribution of medication lockboxes. These lockboxes are an important tool in preventing misuse and promoting safe storage of prescription medications in local households.

Requesting "Street Team" Poster Delivery Volunteers
Who: Requesting volunteers ages 16+
What: Delivering posters to area business to promote upcoming Pavilion events & concerts
Where: Various locations around downtown Sioux Falls
When: Street Team volunteers are welcome to drop off posters at their businesses in a timely manner when it’s convenient for them. Volunteers receive notice when new posters are ready to deliver, which usually happens about once or twice per month
Why: Street Team volunteers have the satisfaction of promoting the Pavilion programs and get to familiarize themselves with downtown Sioux Falls businesses
Bonus: For every 10 hours of Street Team service, volunteers are eligible to receive complimentary/discounted tickets to a Pavilion-hosted performance (some restrictions apply)

ICAP’s 60’s Plus Dining is an adult meal program serving quality nutritious meals to any person aged 60 or over, and their spouses. There is no income, or health guidelines to participate. Our goal is to prevent malnutrition, and isolation, which are major causes of health problems for our aging society. 60’s Plus Dining began serving meals in 1973, and currently has over 3,000 clients throughout 10 counties in east-central South Dakota. There are 4 main options for meals, Congregate, Star Card, Home Delivered, and Frozen Meals.

ICAP’s 60’s Plus Dining is an adult meal program serving quality nutritious meals to any person aged 60 or over, and their spouses. There is no income, or health guidelines to participate. Our goal is to prevent malnutrition, and isolation, which are major causes of health problems for our aging society. 60’s Plus Dining began serving meals in 1973, and currently has over 3,000 clients throughout 10 counties in east-central South Dakota. There are 4 main options for meals, Congregate, Star Card, Home Delivered, and Frozen Meals.

Congregate meals are offered for lunch Monday through Friday, at senior centers, cafés, and apartment complexes throughout our service area. A variety of balanced meals, mostly comfort foods, are served in a group setting to provide quality nutrition, and socialization.

Home Delivered hot meals are provided Monday through Friday to clients who are unable to travel to, or meet at, our congregate or star card locations. A visit from one of our volunteers, offering a hot nutritious meal, often is the only social contact that many of our homebound clients receive each day, helping ease the problem of isolation.

Five Pack Frozen Meals are the perfect solution for both seniors on the go, as well as for those South Dakota seniors that live in isolation, or in areas that do not have even the basic food options. Many rural areas are considered food deserts. Without access to healthy foods, people living in these areas may be at higher risk of diet-related conditions, including malnutrition. Frozen meals have been a great tool to reach seniors in our rural food desert areas, where services were discontinued years ago.

Join us each week as we bring joy and nourishment to children in need through our Backpack Program! With the help of dedicated volunteers and staff, we prepare nearly 3,000 backpacks per week filled with food to support kids over the weekend. We’re looking for helpers to join us in delivering these essential packs to schools across the Sioux Falls and surrounding area.

It is time to organize your team for the annual Rake the Town event on October 25 - 31st, 2025!

Join Workers on Wheels of Active Generations for our Annual Rake the Town event! Rake the Town is a community-wide event to help the elderly who do not have family available to help with their yard work and are not financially or physically able to do the work themselves. Rake the Town is beneficial to senior homeowners who want to remain independent in their own homes but need a little extra help with chores. Our community benefits from the neighborhood's beautification, and volunteers benefit from the rewarding experience of working together to help those in need.

This three-day event will engage over 1,200 volunteers to rake the yards of 400 elderly and disabled homeowners in the Sioux Falls area. Business groups, individuals, families, sports teams, students, scouts, service clubs, etc are welcome. Children are welcome to participate if supervised by adults. Volunteer groups can pick their raking date, number of yards, and zip code preference. The length of time spent on each yard varies from 1-4 hours depending on yard size. Leaf bags are provided, but volunteers are asked to bring their own rakes and, when possible, haul the bags to the leaf drop-off site. If inclement weather arises, teams will need to reschedule and complete their assignments as soon as possible.

BBP is seeking a volunteer to pick up food from Hy-Vee and deliver to our site.  In addition, help put away food that's delivered on Thursdays from Feeding South Dakota.   Delivery from Feeding South Dakota is usually at 9am.  This is 3 Thursday's a month.  If you don't have a vehicle large enough for the order from Hy-Vee, we have options available! 

Out at our Fullerton Farm (230 S. Ellsworth Rd, Box Elder), we'll have a celebration of the bountiful autumn season with food sampling, live animals, gardening tips, hands-on activities, food trucks & more!

Volunteers are needed to help with this event. There are lots of ways for you to assist:

Set-up Team (7 a.m. –10 a.m.): This team will help locate and set up tables, canopies, and deliver supplies to each booth.


Booth Team (9:30 a.m.–2 p.m.): This team will help operate/supervise booths and attractions. Booth activities include fruit tasting, vegetable tasting, blender bikes, assisting with crafts, ensuring the water stations are full, and serving as a greeter, among others.


Tear-down Team: (1:30 p.m.–3:30 p.m.): This team will tear down and return tables, canopies, and materials to designated locations. Actual tear-down begins at 2 p.m. but we ask this team to be present early to review the tasks needed for tear-down.

The Community Connect is a committee of the Housing Stability Partners coalition composed of local agencies and community members. Our purpose is to host events that bring hope and resources to all and bring awareness of local available resources to members of the community. Volunteers are needed to set up on the first day ( includes setting up tables, sorting and folding clothing and stocking tables), insure items are organized and full the day of the event and clean up on the last day.  

All events are offered free to participate with no income requirements.

Please join us in the 2026 Point-in-Time (PIT) Count, a Housing and Urban Development require event is a vital community effort to better understand housing insecurity in our region. The PIT Count provides critical data that informs funding, planning, and services to support individuals and families experiencing homelessness.  The Survey of Housing Insecure People is a local effort to identify individuals that are living on the brink of homelessness.  These statistics are also used for funding, planning, and services to support individuals and families experiencing housing insecurity.  Volunteers are needed to help with administering surveys to individuals struggling with housing security and data entry after the event. 

Every Monday, during the school year, BBP is in need of 5 volunteers to unwrap the food at 10am and get the site ready for the packing on Wednesday.  It does require lifting boxes of food.  This is great for individuals seeking volunteer opportunities.  

The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society sees about 8 thousand animals a year! We need help caring for all of these fur-babies both hands on with socialization or walking, and hands off by cleaning, laundry, etc. Junior volunteers ages 12 and older can volunteer with their 18 year or older guardian or parent, and adults ages 18 years or older can volunteer on their own! Share the Warmth is a one day event where we give out winter-wear items to those in need! Every year we give out over 1,000 coats.

Corporate Packing Events: Gather your co-workers and join in assembling care kits and other needed items.

Caring Cards: Create uplifting cards for Helpline Center staff or to be included with 988 journals.

Staff Support: Show some love to Helpline Center staff. The work they do is often stressful, so an act of kindness goes a long way! Buy or cook a meal for staff, deliver baked goods or flowers, or dream up another way to show your support.

Help Us Package with Purpose!

We’re looking for detail-oriented volunteers to help us fulfill community requests by counting and packaging items for Suicide Preventions Month this September. Volunteers would come in twice a week for about 2 hours (give or take!) during August and September. We’ll have everything ready for you, including printed request lists to check off as you go and clear instructions for how each package should be assembled. If you love organizing, checking things off lists, and making a tangible difference, we’d love to have you join us!

Use your marketing and development skills to support the work of the Helpline Center. Examples include but are not limited to staffing booths, grant support, content writing, photography, or any other skills you would like to share. Interview and background check required. 

We’re looking for reliable and compassionate volunteers to serve as Meal Transport Volunteers for our Center for Families. This role involves picking up the prepared lunch meal from the Bishop Dudley Hospitality House (downtown location) and delivering it to our Center for Families around 3:00 PM each weekday but Tuesday. Though it's lunch, the meal is served as dinner at our center.

At The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night we gather as a community to celebrate, honor, and remember those touched by blood cancers. Friends, families, schools, corporate teams, and sponsors join together to bring light to the darkness of cancer. The funds raised by this community fund lifesaving research, advocacy and support for blood cancer patients and their families.

We are looking for volunteers to help out during and after the event with a variety of volunteer opportunities - lantern/t-shirt distribution, hydration station, parking attendant, greeter, take down and much more! There is one shift of "During The Event" from 5:30PM-8PM and then the "Clean Up Shift" from 8PM-10PM.

Inspire Creativity and Support Artists with Disabilities

The Suzie Cappa Art Center (SCAC) provides a vibrant, supportive environment where artists with disabilities can express themselves creatively and develop their artistic talents. As an SCAC Volunteer, you'll have the rewarding opportunity to be part of this inspiring creative community.

Black Hills Works is seeking volunteers to help organize our photo collection and archive room! 

About the Opportunity: 

We're looking for detail-oriented individuals to help us sort, organize, and preserve photographs and historical materials that tell the story of our organization and the incredible people we serve. This is a perfect opportunity for history enthusiasts, organized minds, and anyone looking to make a meaningful contribution behind the scenes.

We are looking for someone who is interested in serving in a back-up capacity for delivering Senior Commodities boxes. The Senior Commodities program supplies adults 60 and older and living on a limited income with a monthly pre-packaged box of non-perishable food items each month that is designed to supplement nutrients that are typically lacking in their diets. The volunteer interested in this position will need to be able to lift 30 pounds, take/pass a background check, and drive with a current license. This position will serve more as a back-up capacity in case a current driver will be unavailable during the typical delivery time (1pm-3pm, on the 4th Tuesday of the month). The Donations Processor is responsible for documenting, inspecting, and organizing donations and stock and maintaining the inventory of closets and storage areas.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Process and organize in-kind donations.
2. Stock, organize, and maintain the inventory of assigned closets and storage areas.
3. Assist in keeping the shelter clean and orderly.
4. Help with putting seasonal clothing in the Boutique

5. Helping shelter staff with tasks such as but not limited to, Passing out hygiene items, laundry detergent, Hair products, etc.

Work Schedule:
Hours are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays between 9 AM and 5 PM.

A free lunch for guests is served from 11:30 a.m. each weekday and 3:30 p.m. on the weekends. We serve about 120 guests each day! Volunteer duties include preparation of lunch, serving lunch and some clean-up. Have a “factory line” of people to prepare plates and hand out to guests.

Food items for lunch are provided by and are already at the BDHH kitchen. Our kitchen manager will guide you through the recipe of the day!

Opportunity to partially or fully sponsor the cost of the meal served: to fully sponsor the cost, it would be around $200-$250.

The Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Dakota supports families of critically ill children who are receiving treatment at a local hospital. As a part of our services, each family is provided with a blanket upon checking in. We have two Houses here in Sioux Falls, with a combined total of 29 rooms. This means we have a constant need to replenish our blanket supply.

We are not picky on type of blanket, whether it is a handmade tie blanket, handmade quilt, or newly purchased. Our only restriction is that we cannot accept used blankets, due to our immunocompromised population. You are able to create as many blankets as you would like! This is a great activity for anyone to participate in, regardless of age. We have staff at our Houses 24/7 who are able to accept doantions. Donations can be taken to: 825 S. Do you enjoy working with kids and/or sports? Sioux Falls Neighborhood Soccer, an initiative of Empower Sioux Falls, is looking for volunteer coaches this fall for our Saturday morning youth soccer league. We serve children in grades 2nd-5th in low income neighborhoods by offering free soccer instruction, equipment, and a free hot lunch every Saturday, beginning Sept 13 and ending Oct 26.

Minimal soccer experience necessary- we will have experienced head coaches leading each session and need assistants to work with small groups.

Make a Difference: Join Our Food Bank Family

Are you ready to help us tackle hunger in our community? Join us at our distribution center and play a key role in ensuring South Dakota families have the nourishment they need to reach their fullest potential. 

What You'll Do:

Your tasks may vary, but they’re all about putting food on the table! Shifts last up to 2 hours and may include:

BackPack Program
Help us pack nutritious food for kids in Sioux Falls! Work alongside fellow volunteers in an assembly line—some packing while others restock supplies. Together, we’ll make sure kids have the fuel they need to learn and grow.

Food Box Packing
Get involved in packing food boxes for our local seniors or for mobile distributions that support families. It’s a great way to connect with others while making a real impact in your community.

Bulk Food Processing
Join us in our bulk food room, where we take larger quantities and turn them into family-sized portions, including bulk produce. 

Food Sorting and Quality Assurance

As a volunteer, you’ll play a crucial role in sorting food donations or produce  to ensure they are safe for distribution. You’ll also help categorize items, making sure everything is ready for our school and wellness pantries.

Support and Training:

Please arrive at least 5 minutes early and dress in comfy layers with enclosed shoes. We’ll give you the scoop on your tasks and provide support throughout your shift.

LifeScape is looking for a "Big Brother" mentor to be a support and friend for a young adult male at the Children's Campus.

Student is in his late teens and enjoys Sports, Legos and other various activities. He loves being active and learning. So someone willing to learn together, talk sports and being active would be ideal.
He is big fan of Video Games, going out to eat, painting and various other things.

Guest check-in for an overnight stay takes place from 6:30-8 p.m. each evening, 365 days a year. Volunteers may greet guests as they arrive, assist staff with the check-in process or help guests with required paperwork. Volunteers may also assist staff with the distribution of sheets, towels and toiletries. Guests line up at the front door and are admitted a few at a time.

This position requires a tour and meeting with the volunteer coordinator prior to a first shift. Your first shift will be to shadow a staff member or experienced check-in volunteer.

The front desk staffers are the first people our guests, volunteers and donors often encounter as they call or come through the doors. Duties at the front desk can vary from getting someone a warm pair of socks, answering questions about dropping off donations, answering questions about the facility, contacting a staff member and everything in between.

Center of Hope Free Evening Clinic is available for uninsured individuals and families every Wednesday and Thursday from 6:00pm to 8:30pm. Another clinic night may be added due to the increased patient load we have been experiencing this past year (to be determined at a later date). Medical staff (e.g. Registered Nurses, Providers, etc.) are needed to keep the clinic open to the public. Center of Hope offers free clothing and winter gear for individuals and families in need and affordable clothing and winter gear for those who want to "stretch their dollar." Clothing Ministry volunteers help stock the Care Center with clothing and winter gear, organize the clothing rooms, and assist in the Care Center. We have the most need for Clothing Ministry volunteers in the Fall months as we prepare for our busy winter season.
