The Rapid City Salvation Army Thrift Store is looking for volunteers to help recieve donated items. We ask that volunteers be over 18 and be able to lift more than 30lbs. The dock worker will recieve, sort and organize donated items. We have a variety of shifts we recommend 2-4 hour blocks. The thrift store is located at 621 E St Patrick St, Rapid City, SD 57701.

Owen's Outfitters is a new medical equipment lending library based in Sioux Falls, SD. We're looking for regular volunteers who can spare 1-2 hours a week to help manage donated durable medical equipment intake. Volunteers will help us sort out donations, clean and repair items as needed, prepare items for display and storage, and assist staff with equipment database management. The position may require some lifting and rotating actions, but accommodations will happily be provided. Owen's Outfitters is a medical equipment lending library in Sioux Falls whose mission is to provide durable and disposable medical equipment at no charge to those who need it most, sourced through community donations. 
Servers truly are the heart of Owen’s Outfitters. They meet and greet clients, assist with orders, process lending paperwork, and track item requests. They also process and organize donations, stock and manage inventory, and maintain our storefront so it’s always clean and tidy. We are looking for regular volunteers who can provide us with a minimum of four hours a month to work as Servers.
Servers often come to us with prior experience in the medical industry or knowledge of medical equipment and supplies. Although this kind of background can be helpful to get you up and running quickly, it’s certainly not essential for the role. At Feeding South Dakota, our volunteers and staff come together to distribute boxes and bags of food to our neighbors during Mobile Distributions. This essential program helps us support around 12,000 families across the state each month. We are seeking a volunteer to help with the guest registration process, which includes entering or updating guest information on a tablet and checking in guests for the distribution.

Better Choices, Better Health® SD offers chronic disease self-management education workshops designed to help adults living with ongoing physical and/or mental health conditions and caregivers understand how healthier choices can improve quality of life, boost self-confidence, and inspire positive lifestyle changes. Volunteer Leaders are needed! To become a Lay Leader, you will attend either a 4-day in-person training or a 7-week week virtual training that consists of twice weekly 2.5-hour sessions and agree to a minimum two-year commitment. You’ll receive a leader manual and complete training activities identical to those taught to workshop attendees. You’ll learn how to implement and administrate the program and complete practice teaching assignments.

A Museum Store Clerk aids in selling unique items to visitors at the Old Courthouse Museum. This volunteer should be willing to work with staff and the public for making sales, restocking inventory, and keeping the store clean and organized. Volunteer must be at least 18 years of age and should be comfortable working with money and computers. Opportunities include weekdays and weekends.

An Exhibits Assistant aids museum staff in the production and installation of quality exhibits. Duties may include crafting skills, scrapbooking, painting, sanding and finishing, using power tools including drill press, table saw, band saw, and planers, and work with various materials including Plexiglas, Formica, wood, and metals. You will gain an understanding of the exhibit creation process and see that there's a lot more that goes on behind the scenes at the museum than you may realize!

Volunteer must be at least 18 years of age. Hours are primarily weekdays.

The Inn on Westport has South Dakota's first Rock Steady Boxing Program for Parkinson's Patients. Rock Steady Boxings offers boxing-inspired fitness classes to only people with Parkinson's Disease. Volunteers are needed to be "Cornerman" for our boxers/ fighters (Parkinson's patients) as they "fight" back against their disease.  Our Cornerman volunteers will play a vital component of the exercise class by providing encouragement, helping motivate and push the boxers, and ensuring their safety during the workouts.  Cornerman are paired with a boxer and will spend the class with this boxer, but will also interacting with all participants.  Cornerman will help explain exercise modifications as needed, make sure the boxers are staying properly hydrated, and watch for signs of low blood pressure, dizziness, or overheating.

NAMI South Dakota is looking for a new NAMI Rapid City Affiliate Leader or Leaders! This position is great for those who have lived experience with a mental illness or a family member who has a mental illness. The Affiliate Leader makes a great impact on the members of their community by setting up monthly meetings, helping with resource tables at various community events, and supporting others who have struggles regarding mental illness.

Make a meaningful impact by volunteering with the Sallie’s Table Weekend Feeding Program, a vital service for homeless and near-homeless individuals and families in Sioux Falls. Every Saturday and Sunday evening, when other feeding programs are closed, we provide a warm, nutritious meal to those in need—anywhere from 90 to 120 people each weekend.

This is a wonderful opportunity for volunteer groups and families to serve together and connect with the community. Volunteers play an essential role in preparing and packing meals, then serving them to guests from 4:45pm to 5:45pm. After everyone has been served, we invite volunteers to help with cleanup, ensuring the space is ready for the next day.

The “Volunteer to Go” Experience! This is ideal for individuals or groups that can not come in person to volunteer at Lunch is Served! You can pick up at Lunch is Served or an experience can be dropped off to you!

The tote includes lunch bags, a Lunch is Served stamp, and a must be refrigerated stamp. Please stamp the bottom of the sack and bundle in groups of 100.

Inspirational notes are always needed as we go through around 400 a week. You can use your imagination and creativity here. Computer generated notes can work but the recipients of the lunches really like the hand written notes. You can really make someone’s day! So have fun with this and just remember an inspirational note can be a quote, a bible verse, or something that speaks to you!

We can always use donations! Having a drive for granola bars, spoons, applesauce, and napkins are always needed and a drive can promote friendly competition. As always money is always welcome and with a lunch costing only $2.00 a little can go a long way!

We depend on hundreds of volunteers of all ages from service clubs, churches, schools, businesses, social groups, as well as individuals and families to pack all of the sack lunches we serve to the community. 

We ask that volunteers provide donations to cover all or part of the cost of the lunches packed at their scheduled volunteer session. The cost of the food/supplies for each packing varies in size, but is typically $350-$500.

The Tax Aide program is an AARP Foundation and IRS free tax preparation assistance program.  We complete federal tax forms for the low to moderate income population, with special attention to senior citizens and people with disabilities.

All of these activities take place at Active Generations. No accounting background or special tax knowledge is necessary.  Training is provided for all positions.  Basic computer skills are necessary for the tax counselor position, but training is provided for the software and for tax preparation/laws. Training begins in early winter and tax preparation season is February 1 to April 15.

Our volunteers find this program to be very rewarding and a positive experience.  Our clients/taxpayers are extremely grateful for the program.

Disaster Action Teams (DAT) Responders offer emotional support, financial aid, and information to help families start recovering. DAT Responders specifically respond to these local disasters, providing immediate care and support to those affected.

Help share the story of the world’s largest humanitarian movement. Red Cross communications volunteers are part of a professional team that develops and delivers the Red Cross story behind-the-scenes, in-person, online, and on camera through media channels, websites, social media feeds and other content platforms. Volunteers generally contribute in a virtual capacity, with potential for in-person contributions as available.

Grocery Shopper volunteers make an impact in the lives of Call to Freedom clients and their families by providing groceries and other basic need items (toilet paper, paper towels, laundry detergent, etc.)  Call to Freedom staff sends out a monthly grocery list of various needs & you would be responsible for purchasing approximately $25 worth of items.

Volunteers that are part of our Prayer Team make an impact in the lives of trafficking survivors and our state by praying for clients, staff, and the mission of Call to Freedom.  You can pray in small groups at Call to Freedom's office, from your home, or through your church.  The CTF Monthly Prayer meeting takes place on the second Wednesday of each month at 8:30 am.  Prayer needs are sent monthly by the CTF Spirituality Coordinator.

Musical Programs Program/Agency: Dow Rummel Village Date: To be scheduled Time: Afternoon or evening Dow Rummel is looking for people with musical talents to perform for the residents for either one-time events or on-going performances. There is a beautiful grand piano for pianists, as well as a pipe organ available for professional players. The residents enjoy a variety of music both in the afternoon and evening.  CORE is seeking Local Coordinators in Rapid City, Spearfish, and Custer. Local Coordinators can expect to work 160-180 hours per year, and must be reliable, care about students, and their community.  

Local coordinators will attend a 3 to 4 day training school in Rapid City (Paid for by C.O.R.E.) to learn the basics of a program. Any full time position, would be filled from these Local Coordinators. 

As a Local Coordinator, there are certain traits and qualities that are beneficial to coordinating and organizing the Freshman Impact® program.  Local Coordinators need a strong belief in C.O.R.E.’s mission, “Saving teen lives through interactive, preventative education” and C.O.R.E.’s principal beliefs.  Local Coordinators are community leaders practicing good communication and organizational skills, of high moral character and professional in appearance and manner. To be a successful Local Coordinator, you do have to commit to the time and effort necessary.

 1. C.O.R.E. Liaison – You are the local “go-to” person who organizes and coordinates the Freshman Impact® program at the community level following C.O.R.E.’s policies, guidelines and procedures. You are the communication link to and from C.O.R.E.. You are expected to follow C.O.R.E.’s values and direction(s) as it pertains to the changing/ improving of the program.  

You will work closely with C.O.R.E.’s Executive Director as you plan and setup the Freshman Impact® program in your community. You are not on your own after attending the training.  C.O.R.E. will work closely with you providing assistance, direction and resources.  The Executive Director will meet with you weekly and attend some of your planning meetings.  Never hesitate to ask a question or ask for help.

a. You will need to work with your local communities and schools to determine their local student concerns and needs. It is important that specific areas of need be recognized so the Freshman Impact® program can address those areas, i.e. bullying, social media activity, what kind of drug abuse, underage drinking, suicide history, teenage relationship issues, cultural diversity, etc.

b. Knowing the school’s concerns and needs will help you and your team to determine the type(s) of learning stations for the program.  The learning stations should reflect a plan to help students and make them aware of these concerns and issues. The learning stations must meet the values and mission of C.O.R.E.

c. You will use the standard forms provided by C.O.R.E. and keep them updated throughout the planning and final phases of the program.  C.O.R.E. provides the parent letters, waivers, flyers and posters. C.O.R.E. provides the student wristbands, visitor passes, evaluations, student bags, and other materials. C.O.R.E. provides the promotional materials to be used in the community
 

2. Positive Role Model – Role models are meant to inspire, instruct, and to set a good example. Local Coordinators, group leaders and all volunteers helping in the Freshman Impact® program should be positive role models for each other, the community, and most of all, the students. The most important thing you can do is to be honest, thoughtful and consistent. Positive role models aren’t perfect; but they show that what’s important is to be accountable for their mistakes. 

Positive role models possess certain qualities that make them good role models.  

1. Team Leader – You will be delegating local duties to others as you see fit for the program. You are not expected to do everything yourself but pick some key people to help you. You are the leader and conductor of planning meetings for your local program. You are also responsible for bringing the communities, citizens and the local department(s) together as a team to provide the best program for the freshman students in your area(s). This is done by communication throughout the planning process. The most effective kind of leadership is leading by example. 

 2. Fundraising – You are responsible to achieve the fundraising goal for your local program. Fundraising is essential to provide for student materials, supplies, food for students and volunteers, and support local scholarships. You will need to delegate and monitor volunteers who may fundraise in their respective communities to support the program. This is a big part of getting the communities involved and aware of what is going on with the program. 

3.  Building Relationships – It is important that you as the Local Coordinator build relationships with everyone involved in the program. 

4. Community Involvement – Financial support is not the only involvement by the community. Public Service Announcements (PSA’s) and other venues should be utilized to get the community involved in the program. (Ex: Home Shows, School Events, Local Chamber of Commerce, Fliers, etc.) Service organizations are a great source of help, whether financial, or actually volunteering. The community benefits from educating our youth; and the community understands the needs of their youth.

Do you have a passion for the outdoors and are interested in introducing others to the outdoors? Become an Education Assistant Volunteer at the Outdoor Campus! Share your outdoor skill knowledge with others by helping with classes like fishing, hunting, archery, kayaking, outdoor cooking, and more.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

v  Help with setting up and cleaning up class materials with Outdoor Campus staff.

v  Communicate and interact with park visitors and program participants.

v  Distribute class materials and equipment.

v  Assist with classes such as archery, BB Guns, kayaking, outdoor cooking, and more.

v  Aid with classroom management and ensure safety during programming.

v  Assist with tasks such as baiting fishing hooks, fitting life jackets, archery/BB gun range safety, etc.

v  Other duties as assigned

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS: Volunteers must be at least 12 years old. Youth volunteers are required to commit to at least 25 hours of service in a year. Adults are required to commit to at least 50 hours of service. Must be comfortable working in a variety of weather conditions, ranging from cold and snowy to hot and humid. Must be comfortable working with small animals and insects (worms, fish, etc.). Must be able to work with people of various ages and backgrounds. Background screenings are required for applicants 18 years or older. Training is provided.

Are you great at first impressions? The Outdoor Campus is seeking volunteers to be welcoming faces to visitors at our facility. Front Desk volunteers are responsible for greeting guests, answering questions, and directing visitors to various areas and people in the building.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

v  Greet guests visiting the Outdoor Campus

v  Provide information on the Outdoor Campus’ mission, programs, trails, etc.

v  Answer visitors’ questions. If you cannot answer the question, direct guests to the proper person or resource to assist them.

v  Straighten brochures and displays during slow times.

v  Occasionally receive mail or packages

v   Additional tasks or projects as they arise or based on volunteer’s skills, interests, and time availability.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS: Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Adult volunteers are required to commit to at least 50 hours of service. Strong communication skills are required. Must take initiative to greet visitors when they enter the building. Ability to stay calm and collected during stressful situations.

Child Advocates provide companionship, comfort, and care to children from newborns to those aged 18 who are staying in the shelter.
