If you were to teach middle or high school, you would teach all sessions on a single morning/day or you may teach once a week for either three or six weeks, depending on the school. Programs vary but the key concepts teach about Financial Literacy, Work Readiness, and Entrepreneurship.

As an elementary volunteer, you would coordinate directly with the teacher to find five (30-45 minute) sessions between November and March. Each grade level has a unique curriculum with various concepts centered on work readiness, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship.

Make a Difference: Join Our Food Bank Family

Are you ready to help us tackle hunger in our community? Join us at our distribution center and play a key role in ensuring South Dakota families have the nourishment they need to reach their fullest potential. 

What You'll Do:

Your tasks may vary, but they’re all about putting food on the table! Shifts last up to 2 hours and may include:

BackPack Program
Help us pack nutritious food for kids in Sioux Falls! Work alongside fellow volunteers in an assembly line—some packing while others restock supplies. Together, we’ll make sure kids have the fuel they need to learn and grow.

Food Box Packing
Get involved in packing food boxes for our local seniors or for mobile distributions that support families. It’s a great way to connect with others while making a real impact in your community.

Bulk Food Processing
Join us in our bulk food room, where we take larger quantities and turn them into family-sized portions, including bulk produce. 

Food Sorting and Quality Assurance

As a volunteer, you’ll play a crucial role in sorting food donations or produce  to ensure they are safe for distribution. You’ll also help categorize items, making sure everything is ready for our school and wellness pantries.

Support and Training:

Please arrive at least 5 minutes early and dress in comfy layers with enclosed shoes. We’ll give you the scoop on your tasks and provide support throughout your shift.

For safety, all volunteers must be 11 years or older, and those under 14 should bring a parent or guardian to help out.

Our clients rely on local food resources, such as Feeding Brookings. We are looking for an individual who is willing to drive through Feeding Brookings (2030 3rd St) every Thursday anytime from 3-5 PM and pick up an avg of 5-7 boxes of food. It's an easy drive-through- we'll let you know how many boxes we need, you'll let the organization know you're from Margo's Place and call our shelter - we'll check in our clients with them, and they'll load up your car with the boxes to be delivered to our shelter.

You'll feed families and impact your community in under an hour of your time. 

Brookings Backpack Project is looking for an individual or group to pick up food from area grocery stores.  Typically the food will fit into the back of a pickup or SUV; however, we have a partnership with Best Choice Real Estate and can use one of their moving vans.  Pick up is usually on Thursdays and could be flexible!

Bringing donated non-essential items from the warehouse to the closet for stocking

Organizing and stocking items such as:

Personal care products (shampoo, body wash, lotions, deodorant)

Beauty items (nail polish, perfume, curling irons, hair accessories)

Miscellaneous items (water bottles, small household items)

Maintaining an orderly, clean, and accessible section for volunteers and families

Checking items for usability and discarding broken or unsafe items

Communicating with staff regarding inventory needs or surpluses

Responsibilities include:

Stocking and organizing new shoes, pajamas, socks, and underwear in the New Room

Retrieving inventory from the outdoor shed and transporting items inside for stocking

Lifting and placing storage totes (up to 25 lbs) onto shelving units, including overhead shelves

Sorting and organizing items with close attention to sizing, style, and gender

Maintaining a clean, orderly, and well-labeled space

Physical & Safety Requirements:

Ability to lift up to 25 lbs, including lifting above shoulder/head height

Ability to safely carry items from an outdoor storage area into the building

Receiving and putting away all incoming new inventory in the shed

Tracking inventory levels to identify shortages or overabundance of specific items

Communicating regularly with the Operations Coordinator regarding inventory needs, trends, and space concerns

Stocking and organizing baby miscellaneous items

Cleaning and sanitizing baby equipment and supplies

Conducting liability and safety checks on all baby items

Completing recall checks to ensure items meet current safety standards

Verifying that all parts and pieces are present and properly assembled

Testing baby equipment to confirm it is fully functional and safe for use

Opportunity
We are seeking a detail-oriented volunteer to assist with a variety of data entry tasks, which may include scanning and processing waivers, entering information from paper documents into a computer, and updating volunteer and opportunity information. This role supports our behind-the-scenes operations and helps keep our information accurate.

You'll help scoop, weigh, and seal individual bags of pasta that will be distributed to families across the state. Every bag you package helps put food on the table for a South Dakota family.

You'll work in our Clean Room as part of a team to:

This project takes place in our Clean Room, where we package open food products.

We'll provide all required food safety gear:

Please remove all jewelry before entering the Clean Room.

If needed, we'll provide a small bag to safely store your jewelry during your shift. You do not need to remove jewelry that is covered by the provided food safety gear or jewelry considered "permanent."

If you need an accommodation, such as a stool, please let us know before your volunteer shift so we can have everything ready for you when you arrive.

Volunteer Activity:  Seeking fun people (of all ages) looking to help children, of all abilities, to try their hand at various carnival games.  You will be assigned a specific carnival station with all supplies provided.  Your positive attitude and smiles will help children feel comfortable to try out your carnival station and learn new skills while creating life-long fun, memories of school.  It’s a fun afternoon.  We’d love extra hands to help students be successful.

0.5K Trifecta Event Planning Committee Members (1–3 Positions per Location)

Preferred Locations: Spearfish, Rapid City, and Hill City (volunteers from anywhere in the Black Hills are welcome)

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Soliciting and collecting live auction, silent auction, and door prize donations
Building and maintaining relationships with local businesses and supporters
Transporting donated items to Spearfish by designated deadlines
Ensuring all information related to donated items is collected and provided to board members for donor stewardship, recognition, acknowledgment, and engagement purposes
Assisting with pre-event preparation
Supporting event operations on the day of the fundraiser
Assisting with post-event wrap-up and follow-up activities
Participating in online and in-person committee meetings and event planning throughout the year
Assisting with other event-related needs as assigned
Qualifications:

Must be comfortable working independently and as part of a team
Must be dependable and able to meet deadlines
Must possess strong organizational and communication skills
Must be willing to actively participate in fundraising and donor engagement efforts
Must be willing to attend all committee meetings and assist with event preparation and execution
Must have access to reliable transportation for collecting and delivering donated items
Must be willing to sign confidentiality, conflict of interest, and other organizational agreements as required by Hobo’s Healing Heart
Please note that these are year-round volunteer positions that may lead to opportunities to serve on the Board of Directors and/or Grant Application Committee. Individuals selected for these roles should be committed to supporting the mission of Hobo’s Healing Heart and helping ensure the success and sustainability of our fundraising efforts.

Key Responsibilities:

The front desk volunteer will be responsible for greeting guests and answering phone calls.

Volunteers from ANYWHERE can get out the sidewalk chalk and have some creative fun while making a difference! A few simple words of encouragement written in chalk can brighten someone's day, spark a conversation, and serve as a reminder that help, hope, and community are always within reach. Every message contributes to a larger culture of kindness and support, and that is something worth continuing. We invite your organization to participate by chalking positive, encouraging, and hope-filled messages at your location on September 10. Consider including reminders that support is available through trusted resources like 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Artistic ability is great, but not necessary. Draw if you like, or keep it simple with just a positive message of hope & help. Take pics to share too!

Volunteers Needed: Back 2 School Giveaway at LifeLight Festival

Impact Outreach Ministries, Inc. is seeking volunteers to help distribute Back 2 School Hygiene Care Packets during the LifeLight Festival on September 6.

This outreach event helps provide students and families with essential hygiene items as they prepare for the new school year. Volunteers will assist with welcoming attendees, packaging the bags, handing out hygiene care packets, and helping ensure a positive experience for families visiting our booth.

LifeScape’s Mission:  “Empowering people to live their best lives.”

Seeking community members and groups to be participants in the 4 block LifeScape Homecoming Parade for children!    Help children of all abilities celebrate the excitement of a school homecoming by being a parade participant.  Whatever your hobby, skill, or interest- can you share that as you walk/ride in the parade?!  

Parade Participants are welcomed to:  decorate a float, walk as a group with a banner, dress up in fun costumes, drive any vehicle (lawn mower, truck, Semi truck, Construction machinery, tractor, motorcycles, Razor, hot rods, collectible cars, race cars, flatbed trailers welcomed  and any vehicle,!), music groups to perform a few songs, flag team, ROTCY,   welcoming Small Town Day ‘Queens and Princesses’ to make an appearance, surrounding schools choose a theme to teach, Sport teams suit up in your gear/bring along sport props and walk to celebrate your sport, Cheerleaders always welcomed, college clubs welcomed, animals, theatre friends, welcoming all Business, and more.

Bridging Yankton, Pathways to Hope, Help & Healing is a suicide prevention group whose mission is to increase suicide awareness by supporting local and statewide prevention efforts which provide hope, help and healing to individuals and families in our community. Formed in 2016, this coalition of local community members work in partnership with the Helpline Center and United Way of Greater Yankton to plan and host our community's annual Step Forward to Prevent Suicide Walk.

Youth Task Force

The Local Youth Task Force is a committee of the Housing Stability Partners coalition composed of both youth services providers and youth advocates. Our purpose is to increase identification, support systems, and community awareness of youth experiencing homelessness through collaboration and outreach initiatives. Together, we attempt to identify gaps in the youth homeless service spectrum and inform development to enhance service delivery. The committee supports the Youth Action Board in its efforts, with membership functioning as adult mentors.

We Connect Community Committee
As a committee, the We Connect Community Committee works to promote understanding of the individual and social variables involved in homelessness through community outreach efforts. The primary educational tool is the “We Connect Community Toolkit.” As a philosophy, a “We Connect Community” shares an appreciation for both our differences and our universal humanity. In doing so, we strive to be well-connected as independent sectors to share the responsibility of enhancing our overall well-being

Point-in-Time (PIT)/Inadequately Housed Data Committee:
Conduct and organize the annual Point-In-Time (PIT) homeless count along with the inadequately housed surveys. It is a critical source of annual data, providing characteristics of people who are experiencing homelessness. Data from the annual PIT homeless count is used to measure homelessness on local, state, and national levels. PIT count and inadequately housed data assists policy makers and communities measure progress, identify strengths and gaps in services, increases public awareness of homelessness, and enhances system planning and responses. This committee coordinates all of the food, volunteers, service providers, training and other logistics for the PIT Count along with the execution of the inadequately housed survey

Communications
Responsible for managing the Housing Stability Partners coalition’s outreach to the Black Hills community year-round to increase awareness of homeless issues and efforts. Duties include managing the organization’s digital media; TV, Radio, and print media and other awareness and outreach events such as poverty simulations. Additionally, this committee will be at the forefront of expanding the coalition’s volunteer reach and responding to community questions about the Coalition.

Volunteer to mentor student officers, facilitate interactive discussions, and share leadership experience connected to one of eight officer positions. Jobs for America’s Graduates-South Dakota is looking for volunteer session leaders for the 2026 Emerging Leaders Summit on October 7-8.

You’ll mentor a small group of student leaders, share your experience, and help students connect leadership with community impact.

Session leaders will be asked to:
Participate during the summit on October 7 (PM) and October 8 (AM)
Facilitate three interactive discussion sessions
Share relevant leadership experiences, examples, and perspectives
Help students connect their officer responsibilities with leadership, civic engagement, career readiness, and community impact
Review the session materials provided before the event
Optionally join students as a table host during the Etiquette Dinner
Session materials, guidance, and resources will be provided in advance. No formal teaching or facilitation experience is required.

Looking for an opportunity to use your digital media and technology skills to help those in your ciommunity? Lunch is Served is seeking a social media and outreach volunteer to help spread their mission to those needing their services and future volunteers. This role would provide content and support for the website and social media of Lunch is Served. 

Once you are done with your attendant duties you are welcome to stay and enjoy the rest of the gala night as a guest of Solace!

Youth Voices In Prevention (YouthVIP) is a program that is provided through the Education & Outreach program at Solace and is funded by a grant through the OWV/DOJ.

YouthVIP is a prevention education focused on preventing teen dating violence through the use of several programs including using a curriculum created by the CDC called the Healthy Relationship Toolkit (HeaRT).

We are seeking adults to become trained facilitators who would be comfortable in providing this curriculum to youth (grades 6th- 8th). Solace will provide all training materials & items you may need... but what we really need is YOU!! 

Background check & general Solace volunteer onboarding will be required for all volunteers. 

Experience with working with youth is appreciated but not required. 

There may be options for this to be a long-term volunteer opportunity or for volunteer options within the YouthVIP program that are not listed as of date of posting. 

Girls on the Run (GOTR) is an afterschool program for 3rd - 8th grade girls. During an 8-week season we focus on lessons that build social, emotional and physical skills. The program sets girls on a path toward lifelong healthy habits, empowerment, and inclusion. After each season, participants become equipped with essential tools to navigate life’s challenges with empathy, grace, and courage. From there, they become changemakers who lead with compassion, kindness, and resilience.

Join the GOTR impact by volunteering this season as a coach or junior coach (16 - 18 year-old's in high school). You do not have to be a runner to volunteer! There will always be two coaches at each practice leading a group of 8 - 15 girls through the curriculum. Coach commitment is once a week for 1.5 hours. New coaches will attend new coach training to learn more about the program, best practices, and how to facilitate the curriculum. We have two seasons you can choose from. Our spring season starts in March - May and our fall season starts in September - November.

9/11 Day of Service – with Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity

Join us for a meaningful day of impact as the Helpline Center partners with Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity for construction and ReStore projects in alignment with the National Day of Service and Remembrance.

Together, we’ll honor the legacy of 9/11 by turning a day of tragedy into a day of compassion and community action. Volunteers will help complete a range of projects that support Habitat's mission in the Black Hills. 

Do you want to pack meals to feed hungry people? Gather a few friends, your church group, service club, or people from your workplace to volunteer and pack meals with Kids Against Hunger Sioux Falls!

Our packing center is located at 1701 N. Louise Drive, Sioux Falls, SD 57107. This location is a real blessing to us and our mission! It is just seven blocks north of the Sioux Empire Fairgrounds.

Our schedule runns September 2026 through May 2027. Typically we will have food packs on two Wednesday nights and one Saturday morning per month. That leaves a little margin to fit in a few other groups, as we are able.
