Help us bring warmth, joy, and community spirit to kids in need this holiday season! We’re looking for caring volunteers, individuals or teams, to join us at our annual winter-wear distribution event serving children in Grades K–8. During this heartwarming event, volunteers will help distribute brand-new shoes, socks, hats, and gloves to ensure local kids stay warm throughout the winter. With your help, we aim to serve 700 children in just three hours!

JA Finance Park® is an immersive experience for middle and high school students to learn how to meet their financial goals while living within their means. Students participate in teacher-led lessons that culminate in an in person simulation experience. During this one-day (5-hour) experience, volunteers share their life experiences and coach students on topics related to their monthly budgeting decisions.    

Volunteers provide a welcoming environment for patients and families within the Hospice House.

The 27th Annual Festival of Lights Parade will be held on Saturday, November 29. We are in need of volunteers to help secure the parade route. Volunteers are needed from 2 p.m. to the end of the parade, at approximately 8:30 p.m.

As a Greeter/Patient Wheelchair Escort, you can help:

Sprouts & Spades Volunteers are responsible for maintaining all of the plants at RMHC SoDak both indoors and outdoors. Garden/farming experience is not required, but highly recommended. During your first shift, you will receive a House tour including in-depth tours of both gardens. You will report to Sprouts & Spades supervisor Samantha Dixon. Volunteer responsibilities will vary due to weather, season, and necessity. Examples of tasks include (but are not limited to): Watering plants, Harvesting food, Weeding, planting seeds, pruning, changing the water & adding nutrients to hydroponic gardens, maintaining the compost bin, and Pest control (organic methods ONLY).

You will be caring for: 6 Outdoor Raised Garden Beds, Multiple Potted/Hanging Outdoor Plants, Houseplants in Lobby, Compost Bin, Sprouts & Spades Indoor Hydroponic Garden: 3 TowerGardens, 3 Tabletop Herb Gardens, and Potted House Plants. Shifts are available MWF from 9am-12pm. This is the ideal time for the outdoor plants to be watered. Room Refreshers are dedicated volunteers who ensure that we provide a comfortable and clean environment for new families. This amazing team of volunteers works hard to guarantee that our overnight rooms meet our high cleanliness standards and are prepped and stocked for families before they arrive.

Our ideal Room Refreshers enjoy making a room sparkle! You may work independently, or in teams of two with a buddy. These volunteers are vital to ensuring families arrive to a comfortable and clean room. This role is great for individuals with:  

Hours and Commitment

We ask our Room Refreshers to commit to a weekly or bi-weekly shift from 1:00pm-4:00pm. We ask that volunteers commit to a minimum of one full semester of volunteering, or 50 hours. An overview of your position will be provided during your orientation and House tour. On the day of your first shift, you will meet some of the RMHC staff members who will be providing you guidance throughout your time in the House. During this time, you will not be cleaning. Join us for Christmas at the Cathedral: December 18-21 as an usher/greeter for one of our performances. Or Join us as a valet driver/parker for our patron guests.  
We are looking for ushers/greeters for Saturday and Sunday matinees and evening performances. PERK you are welcome to take a seat and enjoy the show too. Additionally, we are looking for valet drivers/parkers for Friday and Saturday evening. Dress warm to park and enjoy cookies, hot coco, and camaraderie in a heated garage during the performance.

Our volunteer House Ambassadors play an important role in the day-to-day operations of the Ronald McDonald House. They perform a variety of tasks such as administrative support, helping keep our house clean, offering family support, serving as a welcoming face, and providing information to our visitors.

Commitment

Minimum one 3-hour shift per month.

Shifts are offered daily from:

House Ambassadors will need to sign up to complete one 3-hour shift of training with the Director of Programs. If the training schedule does not work for you, reach out and we can set something else up. Once training is completed, a full schedule of shifts will be available. House Ambassadors report to the Director of Programs and House Managers on duty. You can sign up for training shifts here.

The Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Dakota supports families of critically ill children who are receiving treatment at a local hospital. As a part of our services, each family is provided with a blanket upon checking in. We have two Houses here in Sioux Falls, with a combined total of 29 rooms. This means we have a constant need to replenish our blanket supply.

We are not picky on type of blanket, whether it is a handmade tie blanket, handmade quilt, or newly purchased. Our only restriction is that we cannot accept used blankets, due to our immunocompromised population. You are able to create as many blankets as you would like! This is a great activity for anyone to participate in, regardless of age. We have staff at our Houses 24/7 who are able to accept doantions. Donations can be taken to: 825 S. Lake Ave (north of the Sanford Children's Castle) or 808 E. 24th Street (one block south of the Avera Orthopedic building). To volunteer, Express Interest below. Pop tabs are found every time you open a soft drink, soup can, and even sometimes on your pet food! These tabs are recycled and converted into cash based on their weight. This cash helps us keep our doors open 24/7. Collecting pop tabs is easy for all ages and groups. Our House encourages families, schools, organizations, businesses, and small groups to collect pop tabs. Simply remove the pop tab from the aluminum can and place them into your favorite collection container! Containers with removable lids are preferred. Decorating your container brings attention to them & reminds everyone to save their tabs! Pop Tabs can be dropped off 24/7 at one of our Houses: 825 S Lake Ave. or 808 E 24th St. You may also bring the tabs directly to an aluminum recycler and ask that the check be made out to Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Dakota.

Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Dakota is committed to Keeping Families Close by providing a safe place to stay with the comforts of home at no cost to families with children receiving care at nearby medical facilities. The support of family is crucial to patient healing, and we're here so families can remain close to medical care and to each other during their most challenging times.

We provide meals a daily for families staying at either of our two Houses here in Sioux Falls. Youth & Family Services (YFS) and the Exchange Club of Rapid City will once again be hosting the Holiday Gift Wrapping Booth inside Uptown Rapid. All funds raised at the Holiday Gift Wrapping Booth will be used to support YFS' programs that serve more than 14,000 children and families living in 31 counties throughout western South Dakota. Please consider signing up to volunteer for this holiday fundraising project! This is a terrific opportunity to spread some holiday cheer with your coworkers, friends, family, or your club/group while supporting children in our community (volunteers must be 13 years of age or older). We need meal providers to feed our volunteers as they work on construction projects. We have volunteers at our construction site every Wednesday and Thursday who all love a nice lunch! You can either drop lunch off with our crew at the construction site, or you can drop it off at our office and we can run it out if you don't have time! Reach out and we can set up a day for you to feed our crew!

Our Red Kettle Campaign is our largest fundraiser and where most of the money we give out in financial assistance comes from. During the holiday season (November 11th to December 23rd), we will be ringing at 6 different locations to spread the word about our organization and offer free-will donations. The money raised during kettle season goes right back into our community to help families in need with hotel stays for the homeless, rent/mortgage, utility bills, prescriptions, gas for medical appointments, groceries, and more.

Fiscal year 2024 we spent $36,500 on financial assistance.

We assisted 620 families financially.

We helped 65 homeless adults and 22 homeless children with a hotel room.

We give out dental, laundry, personal hygiene, cleaning, & homeless packs every day

Prairie Dogs Search and Rescue (SAR) is an association of volunteer K9 SAR Teams available to Law Enforcement, Emergency Management, Fire Departments or other official search agencies. Resources are available to official agencies at NO COST.

Every week they could use 1 or 2 volunteers to lay trails for the tracking dogs and hide for the area dogs.

As an elementary volunteer, you would coordinate directly with the teacher to find five (30-45 minute) sessions between November and March. Each grade level has a unique curriculum with various concepts centered on work readiness, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship.

We are looking for someone who is interested in serving in a back-up capacity for delivering Senior Commodities boxes. The Senior Commodities program supplies adults 60 and older and living on a limited income with a monthly pre-packaged box of non-perishable food items each month that is designed to supplement nutrients that are typically lacking in their diets.

The volunteer interested in this position will need to be able to lift 30 pounds, take/pass a background check, and drive with a current license. This position will serve more as a back-up capacity in case a current driver will be unavailable during the typical delivery time (1pm-3pm, on the 3rd Tuesday of the month). Who We Are: A collaborative initiative between the Helpline Center, Teammates, LSS, and the Sioux Falls School District to increase mentoring at three Sioux Falls elementary schools.

What: Mentors are supportive adults who meet with their mentee one-on-one to play games, make crafts, and be a listening ear.

Where: Anne Sullivan, Cleveland, and Terry Redlin elementary schools.

Through foster care, thousands of animals have received special care before getting a second chance at a forever home. So many of our animals need foster care before they are ready to find new homes, and this need continues to increase. Foster volunteers take responsibility for spending individualized time with these animals and providing a safe environment and loving home for them until they are able to go up for adoption. Each year, more than 250 foster families, open up their homes, and share their love and lives with fosters from the SFAHS. They give hands-on care to the animals that need it most, assist in providing accurate personality descriptions, and provide support. SFAHS fosters have a deep understanding of the hard work and passion that goes into saving the lives of our rescued animals, helping us to create a better future for all animals.

The Center of Hope has a winter clothing ministry that could use your touch! Winter outerwear items (coats, snow pants, boots, gloves/hats/scarves are donated. The items are sorted, evaluated (checking if zippers work, looking for rips, spots, etc) and then tagged. Shelves and racks may need to be re-stocked. Volunteers will go through a short training process on their first visit. This volunteer opportunity has flexibility built into it! Once trained, a volunteer can comes back as their schedule allows or can commit to the same block of time each week. This is an opportunity to have fun working alone or with a friend or two. We'd love to have you help us out!

Volunteers are needed at the Angel Tree table to greet donors, answer questions, hand out Angel Tree gift suggestion sheets and monitor the gift donations. The Salvation Army is required to have someone at the table from the time the mall opens until it closes each day. At least a two-hour time commitment is required. This is a great small-group activity. Larger groups could sponsor a whole day.

When you volunteer to stand at the Salvation Army's kettles, you're not just ringing a bell. You're changing lives and strengthening our community. The Salvation Army can help struggling individuals, families, and our community thanks to the Red Kettle Campaign. The Red Kettle Campaign will begin at some locations on Friday, November 7th and all locations will be available by Friday, November 21st, 2025. The campaign will run through December 24th, 2025. Key Responsibilities:

What to wear:

Distributions are held outside, please dress accordingly for all types of weather. Wear comfortable clothing in layers. Closed-toe/closed-heel shoes are required, 100% of the foot must be covered. No crocks, sandals, Keen sandals, etc. If you arrive not wearing appropriate footwear, we will kindly ask that you leave and change shoes or volunteer with us another time.

This position may be working outdoors in a parking lot around vehicle traffic. For safety reasons, all volunteers must be 11 years or older. Volunteers under 14 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

Volunteer facilitator will lead veteran Moral Injury groups through our 12-15 week program. Training will be provided free of charge. All applicants are subject to UA and a background check. Groups meet once a week for about 90 minutes.

Feeding South Dakota serves ALL 66 counties in the state and over 12,000 families per month.

HOW?

Because our Mobile Food Distribution Program allows Feeding South Dakota to go where hunger is, instead of hunger having to find us.

Every successful distribution includes staff and volunteers to ensure our guests are welcomed and provided with food in an efficient and friendly manner.

Each stop will provide you a chance to get some fresh air, meet other volunteers and guests, and help rural communities in need. This is a great opportunity for all who are curious about food insecurity and how it impacts rural communities.

McCrossan Boys Ranch in Sioux Falls is a private non-profit organization that reaches out to troubled boys between the ages of 11 to 20 who have experienced conflict in their lives. By working on values, goals, education, and life skills, we prepare our boys to live a balanced life outside the Ranch.

Volunteers in the Visitor Center will sit at the front desk and greet guests, help keep the archive room tidy, and occasionally assist with tour and field trip groups. 

The Tree of Hope provides an opportunity for the community to support the boys of McCrossan Boys Ranch who have struggled with conflict in family, school, or the community.  Accepts collections of socks, underwear, towels, hats, and gloves for the holidays.  Trees will be displayed starting Friday, November 14, 2025, at HyVee on Minnesota Avenue, Chick-fil-A, Scheels, and both Runnings locations, which contain cards with the name of a McCrossan boy.  Select a name from the tree, buy a gift, and return it to the tree.  Cards are also available by calling McCrossan Boys Ranch. 

Want to be a hero with a spatula (or a pizza delivery app)? We're looking for groups to fund or cook and deliver the meal for our fantastic adoptive/foster families and volunteers at our monthly Family Gatherings. Meals will be served on the 3rd Tuesday evening of the month (August - May, excluding December). We will have 80-120 grateful guests!

The special events committee is dedicated to ensuring the success of our annual Corks & Kegs fundraising event. Committee members will collaborate to plan, coordinate, and execute all aspects of the event—from pre-event preparations to day-of activities. Through strategic efforts and teamwork, the committee aims to deliver an exceptional experience while meeting or exceeding event revenue goals.

Overall, the time commitment can range from about 1 hours per month during the early planning stages, increasing to around 8 hours per month as the event approaches, and peaking at around 2 hours during the week of the event itself.

The committee will meet at least once a month, and potentially more frequently leading up to the event. 2025 Corks & Kegs is Friday, Nov. 21 at The District in Sioux Falls. This will be the 11th year.

Holiday Lunch Helpers assist with preparing, serving, and cleaning up meals while spreading cheer to everyone who attends. This is a fun, festive way to give back during the holiday season, whether you volunteer for one day or more.

Bring a small (2-3 people) or large group (3-15people) of friends to LifeScape to create a time of music and memories by singing holiday favorites and everyday favorites. We welcome acapella voices and/or musical accompaniment (bells, recordings, speakers, guitars, etc) as you share the classical kid and religious favorite holiday songs.

Sign Language Communication Companion

LifeScape’s Mission is to empowering people to live their best life. 

Would you enjoy the opportunity to help with members of the Deaf community in a welcoming, supportive environment or maybe the opportunity to greatly improve receptive and expressive skills in ASL? LifeScape is in search of Sign Language/spoken English friends to assist in the communication between hearing individuals and the Deaf or hard-of-hearing.  Spend time together in leisure activities at person’s home or meet out in the community for fun opportunities. Days and times can vary according to everyone’s schedules.  Typically spending 1.5 -2.5hrs per time together.

Qualifications:

 1. Be compassionate, friendly, caring, patient, and dependable

 2.  Awareness of Deaf culture and ability to communicate with adults who use American Sign              Language in a variety of signing levels and styles.

 3. Good organization and time management skills.

4.  Dedication to dates established to get together.

5.  Willingness to try various leisure activities of interest to person supported by LifeScape.

Holiday - Grant a Special Christmas Wish for Children and Adults with Disabilities

Want to spread joy and be Santa’s Helper for children and adults with disabilities this holiday season? 

LifeScape’s Wish Tree shines kindness and light into people’s hearts by granting a unique and special wish, specifically requested by a child or adults with disabilities supported by LifeScape.    Due to financial limitations or no family support, specific children and adults supported by LifeScape have been identified as not receiving any Christmas presents. Everyone deserves to feel special over the holidays and you can help make their Christmas filled with joy!

Timelines:  November 3, 2025 through Dec 14, 2025, email  VolunteerServices@LifeScapeSD.org  to request a unique wish list for a child or adult supported or ask questions.  Deadline to turn in gifts, December 17, 2025.

Kiwanis is a global service organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time. Our Kiwanis Club of Sioux Falls supports projects that help children, families, and neighborhoods thrive.

We’re looking for community-minded people who would like to:

The Rapid City Arts Council (RCAC) often has need to distribute flyers to neighborhood businesses to spread the word about our growing list of programs, classes, and events. Flyer distributors represent our organization in the community and are often person individuals will interact with to talk about the Rapid City Arts Council and the Dahl. 

Volunteers will be asked to deliver paper flyers to local businesses and request that the flyer be put up on their bulletin board. Volunteers are also responsible for selecting out of date flyers from the RCAC and removing them from local bulletin boards. 

Volunteers will be given a stack of flyers to distribute as well as a current list of businesses that RCAC flyers regularly appear in.

Volunteers are expected to walk up to an hour at a time, speak with staff at local businesses, and lift up to 10lbs unassisted.

Recycling Plastic into Park Benches

 Project Details: Help clean and sort 200 lbs of plastic that will be recycled into park benches! All materials and training will be provided. Supervision and support throughout your shift.

Volunteer Provides the opportuinity for children to interact with a positive adult role model. Being a big buddy provides a unique opportunity to become a friend and mentor to a child. Big Buddies commit to one year of visiting a CHS child, typically weekly, with at least two monthly visits. Big buddies may act on a student's behalf in the educational decision-making process.

Please join us in the 2026 Point-in-Time (PIT) Count, a Housing and Urban Development required event is a vital community effort to better understand housing insecurity in our region. The PIT Count provides critical data that informs funding, planning, and services to support individuals and families experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity.  The Survey of Housing Insecure People is a local effort to identify individuals that are living on the brink of homelessness.  These statistics are also used for funding, planning, and services to support individuals and families experiencing housing insecurity.  Volunteers are needed to help with administering surveys to individuals struggling with housing security and data entry after the event. 

Senior Companions of South Dakota is a volunteer program that provides in-home assistance and respite care to the elderly and disabled in more than 50 communities across South Dakota. The program has been called one of South Dakota's most positive senior programs. It allows low- income, healthy volunteers an opportunity to provide companionship and in-home assistance to those who need help to live independently.
Senior Companion activities might include:

♦ light housekeeping
♦ playing cards
♦ reminiscing or just enjoying the friendship of a peer.
Senior Companion volunteers receive an hourly stipend, mileage reimbursement, meal allowances and other benefits. These benefits do not reduce any governmental assistance and are not taxable.
The Senior Companion is valuable in the care and support of our clients, especially in our rural communities. There is no charge for our services to the client or a client's famiy. Clients report that Senior Companions help prevent or delay long-term care placement, increase the client’s ability to live alone, reduce loneliness and isolation, and reduce stress levels.

Journey of Hope is seeking passionate leaders to join our Board of Directors. If you care about providing people with basic necessities and giving juveniles and adults the opportunity to express themselves through art, we want to hear from you. Diverse backgrounds and experiences are welcome-especially in social services, education, justice, or nonprofit leadership. 

Greet and assist visitors to ensure they feel welcome in the park by providing information and answering questions. Monitor campground activities and report potential issues to park staff. Assist with customer service tasks such as selling firewood and checking out rental equipment. Support park operations through light landscape maintenance. Help maintain park facilities, including cleaning cabins, comfort stations, and vault toilets.

Volunteers are provided full hookup (water, sewer, and electric) campsite in exchange for 24 hours of service per person, per week.

Support/Training:

Volunteers will be given instructions and training upon arrival and will have staff support and supervision throughout their shift. 

What to wear:

Distributions are held outside, please dress accordingly for all types of weather. Wear comfortable clothing in layers. Closed-toe/closed-heel shoes are required, 100% of the foot must be covered. No crocks, sandals, Keen sandals, etc. If you arrive not wearing appropriate footwear, we will kindly ask that you leave and change shoes or volunteer with us another time.

Age Requirements:

This position may be working outdoors in a parking lot around vehicle traffic. For safety reasons, all volunteers must be 11 years or older. Volunteers under 14 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
