Volunteer: 60's Plus Dining

ICAP’s 60’s Plus Dining is an adult meal program serving quality nutritious meals to any person aged 60 or over, and their spouses. There is no income, or health guidelines to participate. Our goal is to prevent malnutrition, and isolation, which are major causes of health problems for our aging society. 60’s Plus Dining began serving meals in 1973, and currently has over 3,000 clients throughout 10 counties in east-central South Dakota. There are 4 main options for meals, Congregate, Star Card, Home Delivered, and Frozen Meals.

Congregate meals are offered for lunch Monday through Friday, at senior centers, cafés, and apartment complexes throughout our service area. A variety of balanced meals, mostly comfort foods, are served in a group setting to provide quality nutrition, and socialization.

Home Delivered hot meals are provided Monday through Friday to clients who are unable to travel to, or meet at, our congregate or star card locations. A visit from one of our volunteers, offering a hot nutritious meal, often is the only social contact that many of our homebound clients receive each day, helping ease the problem of isolation.

Five Pack Frozen Meals are the perfect solution for both seniors on the go, as well as for those South Dakota seniors that live in isolation, or in areas that do not have even the basic food options. Many rural areas are considered food deserts. Without access to healthy foods, people living in these areas may be at higher risk of diet-related conditions, including malnutrition. Frozen meals have been a great tool to reach seniors in our rural food desert areas, where services were discontinued years ago.

Volunteer: Sioux Falls: Food Packing - Help Feed Families, Kids & Seniors (2026)

Make a Difference: Join Our Food Bank Family

Are you ready to help us tackle hunger in our community? Join us at our distribution center and play a key role in ensuring South Dakota families have the nourishment they need to reach their fullest potential.

What You'll Do:

Your tasks may vary, but they’re all about putting food on the table! Shifts last up to 2 hours and may include:

BackPack Program
Help us pack nutritious food for kids in Sioux Falls! Work alongside fellow volunteers in an assembly line—some packing while others restock supplies. Together, we’ll make sure kids have the fuel they need to learn and grow.

Food Box Packing
Get involved in packing food boxes for our local seniors or for mobile distributions that support families. It’s a great way to connect with others while making a real impact in your community.

Bulk Food Processing
Join us in our bulk food room, where we take larger quantities and turn them into family-sized portions, including bulk produce.

Food Sorting and Quality Assurance

As a volunteer, you’ll play a crucial role in sorting food donations or produce  to ensure they are safe for distribution. You’ll also help categorize items, making sure everything is ready for our school and wellness pantries.

Support and Training:

Please arrive at least 5 minutes early and dress in comfy layers with enclosed shoes. We’ll give you the scoop on your tasks and provide support throughout your shift.

Who Can Volunteer:

Must be able to stand and walk for 1-2 hours. Able to lift at least 5 pounds. All abilities are welcome! If you need accommodations, reach out to us at info@feedingsouthdakota.org. A waiver must be signed before volunteering. If you’re under 18, don’t forget to have a parent or guardian sign it.

Age Requirements:

For safety, all volunteers must be 11 years or older, and those under 14 should bring a parent or guardian to help out.

Volunteer: Quilts for Kids - Ronald McDonald House

The Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Dakota supports families of critically ill children who are receiving treatment at a local hospital. As a part of our services, each family is provided with a blanket upon checking in. We have two Houses here in Sioux Falls, with a combined total of 29 rooms. This means we have a constant need to replenish our blanket supply.

We are not picky on type of blanket, whether it is a handmade tie blanket, handmade quilt, or newly purchased. Our only restriction is that we cannot accept used blankets, due to our immunocompromised population. You are able to create as many blankets as you would like! This is a great activity for anyone to participate in, regardless of age. We have staff at our Houses 24/7 who are able to accept doantions. Donations can be taken to: 825 S. Lake Ave (north of the Sanford Children's Castle) or 808 E. 24th Street (one block south of the Avera Orthopedic building). To volunteer, Express Interest below. For more information, contact Samantha at (605) 336-6398 Ext. 8 or Samantha@rmhcsodak.org.

Volunteer: Pull Together - Pop Tabs for Ronald McDonald House

Pop tabs are found every time you open a soft drink, soup can, and even sometimes on your pet food! These tabs are recycled and converted into cash based on their weight. This cash helps us keep our doors open 24/7. Collecting pop tabs is easy for all ages and groups. Our House encourages families, schools, organizations, businesses, and small groups to collect pop tabs. Simply remove the pop tab from the aluminum can and place them into your favorite collection container! Containers with removable lids are preferred. Decorating your container brings attention to them & reminds everyone to save their tabs! Pop Tabs can be dropped off 24/7 at one of our Houses: 825 S Lake Ave. or 808 E 24th St. You may also bring the tabs directly to an aluminum recycler and ask that the check be made out to Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Dakota.

Volunteer: Red Kettle Campaign

Our Red Kettle Campaign is our largest fundraiser and where most of the money we give out in financial assistance comes from. During the holiday season (November 11th to December 23rd), we will be ringing at 6 different locations to spread the word about our organization and offer free-will donations. Ring the bell to support your community and raise funds to help families in need! Sign up at registertoring.com or call the office at 605-219-8970. There are multiple open slots at each location.

Why ring the bell?

The money raised during kettle season goes right back into our community to help families in need with hotel stays for the homeless, rent/mortgage, utility bills, prescriptions, gas for medical appointments, groceries, and more.

Fiscal year 2024 we spent $36,500 on financial assistance.

We assisted 620 families financially.

We helped 65 homeless adults and 22 homeless children with a hotel room.

We give out dental, laundry, personal hygiene, cleaning, & homeless packs every day

Volunteer: Foster Homes for Animals

Through foster care, thousands of animals have received special care before getting a second chance at a forever home. So many of our animals need foster care before they are ready to find new homes, and this need continues to increase. Foster volunteers take responsibility for spending individualized time with these animals and providing a safe environment and loving home for them until they are able to go up for adoption. Each year, more than 250 foster families, open up their homes, and share their love and lives with fosters from the SFAHS. They give hands-on care to the animals that need it most, assist in providing accurate personality descriptions, and provide support. SFAHS fosters have a deep understanding of the hard work and passion that goes into saving the lives of our rescued animals, helping us to create a better future for all animals.
