Since 2015, Lutheran Social Services has brought older adults ages 60 and up together with trained volunteers. The LSS Better Together program matches older adults with volunteers in Minnehaha, Lincoln and Brookings counties. This program is part of our independent adult services and helps to establish trusting relationships and regular social opportunities between older adults who live on their own and LSS volunteers.

Since 2015, Lutheran Social Services has brought older adults ages 60 and up together with trained volunteers. The LSS Better Together program matches older adults with volunteers in Minnehaha, Lincoln and Brookings counties. This program is part of our independent adult services and helps to establish trusting relationships and regular social opportunities between older adults who are living independently and LSS volunteers.

We would love to find character coaches for area high school teams. These people would come alongside athletic coaches and offer faith-based support and encouragement. 

Friends of the Big Sioux River offers companies and organizations an opportunity to be directly involved in cleaning up the banks of our local streams and rivers. If your business or group is interested in donating time to help clean up a stretch of a waterway, FBSR will help to locate a site in need and provide the clean-up materials. Help us pull off the biggest event of the season! We're always looking for volunteers to help set up delivered trees for our annual Festival of Trees.

Help make mealtimes more welcoming and enjoyable for our members. This volunteer opportunity is available Monday through Friday from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM. Choose the days that work best for you. Tasks include carrying food to tables, clearing dishes, and connecting with others through friendly conversation. It's a simple way to make a meaningful impact.

Every Thursday, we deliver 40-50 food boxes for Feeding Brookings. Driver needs assistance in handling/delivery of food boxes to individuals who cannot make it to the food pickup site.

Our woodshop volunteers help repair, restore, and occasionally build furniture to ensure donated items are safe, clean, and ready for distribution. Tasks may include sanding, gluing, painting, tightening hardware, or basic woodworking. This role is ideal for individuals comfortable with tools and hands-on work. Volunteers work independently or alongside others in a dedicated shop space, contributing directly to the quality of items given to families in need. Truck Volunteers help with the pick-up and delivery of furniture across the community. This includes collecting donated items from households and delivering furniture to individuals and families in need. Volunteers may serve as drivers (with a valid driver’s license) or passengers, working together to load and unload items safely. Want to make a difference in someone's life through teaching?

Caminando Juntos, a Hispanic Ministry Center in Sioux Falls, is seeking patient, friendly, and compassionate individuals willing to tutor English Language Learners 1:1.

Volunteers would set their own schedules and arrange tutoring times and locations with his/her assigned student; tutors should be available to tutor 2 hours per week. Daytime and evening tutor times are available.

Tutors will receive ongoing training and support, as well as teaching materials to make their job easy and rewarding. Tutors should be open to working with diverse cultures and would preferably have some teaching and/or tutoring experience, although teaching experience is not required. Knowledge of Spanish is helpful.

1:1 English classes run year round. A volunteer orientation and screening session is required and a commitment of three months minimum is preferred.

The Church on the Street Health and Healing event will be held on Saturday, January 31st, 2026 from 1:00-3:00 at the Multi-Cultural Center (515 N Main Ave, Sioux Falls). This annual event is a day of pampering for people living without homes or in poverty. Haircuts, manicures, makeup applications, blood pressure checks, dental screenings, balloon animals, face painting, food, and more will all be free! Faith Through Frames will be there, giving all guests free portraits.

Special Instructions They are big eaters and like leftovers for lunch pail the next day. There are 2 ovens to use as well. We arrive at 4:00 if you would like to do any meal prep at church, then we like everyone to worship with us from 5:00-6:15ish before coming back into the kitchen after the service to serve the meal. We have had some generous donations of different meats (inventory always changing), if you would like to use this in your meal you are making, please coordinate with Ruth getting access to this meat. Also we have had a very generous bakery donate desserts for us to use every week.

Feeding South Dakota serves ALL 66 counties in the state and over 12,000 families per month.

HOW?

Because our Mobile Food Distribution Program allows Feeding South Dakota to go where hunger is, instead of hunger having to find us.

Every successful distribution includes staff and volunteers to ensure our guests are welcomed and provided with food in an efficient and friendly manner.

Each stop will provide you a chance to get some fresh air, meet other volunteers and guests, and help rural communities in need. This is a great opportunity for all who are curious about food insecurity and how it impacts rural communities.

Key Responsibilities:

Volunteers will ride in a Feeding South Dakota vehicle with one of our fun and kind-hearted Drivers to assist with guest registration and handing out food.

Support/Training:

Please arrive at least 5 minutes early and wear comfortable clothing in layers and fully-enclosed shoes. Volunteers will be given instructions and training upon arrival and will have staff support and supervision throughout their shift.

Host Families are volunteers who are willing to open their homes to kiddos whose parents are facing temporary crisis.   These families are needed year round, with an average length of stay being around 36 days.  Please note placements can be much shorter or longer depending upon the situation.  Host families are required to go through an application and training process.  This process helps to prepare host families for different experiences and also give us, Bethany, the opportunity to discover the host families openness to age, gender, etc.  Thank you for considering volunteering your time and opening your home to kiddos who need you.  This is an amazing way to serve our community!

The Road To Recovery Volunteer Driver provides people with transportation to and from their cancer-related medical appointments. Drivers donate their time to help people with cancer get the lifesaving treatments they need.

Volunteer groups from organizations, churches, and businesses, or family and friends are needed to sponsor and provide workers for each weekly food distribution.  Distributions happen from 6-7 pm on Thursdays. Volunteers come early on the Thursday they are scheduled to help to be trained by the Food to You coordinator, set up the area, unload and arrange items, and interact with guests as they conduct the distribution. 

Here is what is needed from each group:

4-5 volunteers to be at the site by 4:15pm to help with set up and stay through and help with the distribution, usually done before 8:00pm

15-18 volunteers to be at the site by 5:15pm, including some who are able to lift and carry boxes. All volunteers should be high school aged or older, middle school aged children may volunteer with adult supervision.

Borderlands Horse Sanctuary is run completely by volunteers and is always in need of dedicated volunteers for a wide range of tasks (both hands-on and online). Volunteers with Hope Haven International refurbish used wheelchairs for distribution to people in need in developing countries.  The work includes cleaning, simple mechanical work (if you can unscrew a bolt, you can do the work), greasing bearings, and optionally more complicated mechanical work.  Preferred work times are Tuesday and Thursday mornings, but other days or times are possible.  This particular listing is for volunteers who will regularly return.  See a separate listing for one-Ime opportunities.

Our hardworking Tuesday/Thursday construction crew needs a meal on April 25th! The individual who originally signed up is unavailable, leaving our crew without a meal that day. If you'd like to support our mission, please consider providing lunch for10 individuals. Meals are delivered to different sites, so please, I will contact you in advance and I’ll share the drop-off location on April 24. A waiver of liability will need to be signed. If you enjoy welcoming and interacting with guests and can donate at least 2 hours per week between 8 AM and 4 PM Monday through Thursday, you can serve as our receptionist. Training will be provided. A few tasks will be answering the phone, welcoming walk-ins, taking messages for staff, and collecting paperwork from clients. Your gift will permit our staff to be more effective in our roles, and you will get to help people on the phone and in the lobby who are seeking assistance.

The Retreat has 10+ acres that need to be kept mowed from during our season. Appropriate tools are provided, including riding mower and push mower; rakes; etc. Everyone helps keep the grounds clean and safe, but help mowing each week would free staff up for more time consuming and labor-intensive projects.

The Retreat has several flower/shrub gardens on the property, with almost unlimited possibilities to expand on current gardens or to create more. It is more than staff can handle anymore ... we need help! Yes there is endless weeding and pruning. But bring your gardening expertise and creativity and play!  We have so many plants that can be divided and moved around; new garden spots created ... anything you can dream up. Hours are totally flexible!

Help grant life-changing wishes - be the friendly smile and helping hand in a wish involving travel! Airport greeters meet and welcome wish families at the airport, help departing wish families with check in and security or assist arriving wish families with baggage and locate their pre-arranged limousine or rental car; greeters also welcome families home from their trip by supporting them with their baggage and locating their ground transportation. These volunteers help to ease any concerns the wish family has about navigating the airport and airline travel. The ultimate goal is to ensure the wish family is comfortable and stress-free as they begin or end their wish experience.

Create special touches that help turn a wish into a life-changing experience - be a wish booster! We are looking for volunteers to support travel needs for wish kids who fly out of Rapid City by (1) decorating their hotel room and/or (2) creating airport greet signs for their departures and returns.

Our virtual visit volunteers are young adults who participate in video visits with seniors every week on our online platform. Each week, they return to meet with the same senior to share stories about what is going on in their lives. We’re looking for outgoing, chatty volunteers who can commit to one hour visits each week on the same day and time, for a minimum of 16 weeks. The goal of these visits is to create intergenerational relationships between senior citizens and young college students.

Neighborhood Revitalization

·         We do exterior projects and interior projects on homes Tuesday – Friday

·         A lot of our projects help individuals stay in their homes longer 

·         No experience necessary! NR Coordinator will be on-site to provide training and offer safety tips

·         All tools and equipment will be provided by Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sioux Falls

·         Tasks can range from painting, staining, caulking, door replacement, screen repair, and yard clean-up

·         NR shifts work best with groups of 2-10 people.

·         Must be 14 years old with parental or guardian consent to be on the job site

Rock the Block in Terrace Park Neighborhood will be June 4th -7th!

Looking to help SHIFT Sioux Falls? It takes all kinds of people to make SHIFT run smoothly. Whether you love working on cars, talking to people, or doing office work we can find a place for you here! We perform mostly minor repairs, brakes, oil changes, belt changes, etc. We also perform many suspension repairs that are bolt-off, bolt-on style repairs. We don't go inside the engine or touch the transmission. SHIFT is a great place to learn and no experience is required to join in!

Keep Clean Downtown Brookings is a volunteer effort to remove litter in the Downtown Brookings neighborhood. Downtown Brookings works with various groups and individuals looking to volunteer during the spring, summer, and fall months (as weather and volunteer participation allows). Anyone can volunteer, including all ages and groups sizes, during most daylight hours, seven days a week. All supplies and instructions will be provided at the event - just bring yourself and a friend or two!

Volunteers must complete a waiver before volunteering. Waivers will be sent ahead of time or can be completed onsite. If under 18, parents must sign the waiver and an adult must accompany them during cleanup.

Community Mentoring matches volunteer mentors with children ages 7 to 14 who meet outside of school in the community. Matches are supported by the LSS Community Mentorng Program Coordinators who works to ensure a successful experience for all.

Children can start meeting with a Community mentor after they turn 7 years old, and must be under the age of 14 to enroll as a new participant. Established matches can continue to meet after the child turns 14.

Community matches meet for four hours per month with dates, times and the activity of each meeting set by the match. To help with this, LSS provides an activity card that offers discounts to program participants and hosts monthly events that all matches are invited to attend.

Parent/guardian involvement is essential in Community Mentoring and is needed to initiate enrollment in the program. Parent/guardians are also expected to work with mentors to schedule meetings and to respond to program staff. Click here to enroll your child in LSS Community Mentoring.

The Literacy Council of the Black Hills relies on volunteers to fulfill our mission: to teach adults to speak, read, and write English. We invite you join us on this rewarding journey! You can transform a life in as little as one hour a week. Tutors will receive a 10-hour training (over 3 sessions together) and ongoing support from our Program Coordinator. Tutoring sessions are at public places and at times that are convenient to both tutors and students. All tutoring materials are located at the Rapid City Public Library.

In School Mentoring volunteers spend one hour per week with an elementary or middle school student at the school. Mentors and students spend time doing a variety of activities together, including:
