Volunteer: Cultural Liasion

We are currently in the process of developing a therapeutic curriculum designed for individualized and group therapy with juveniles in South Dakota who are involved in the justice system for gun-related offenses. As part of this work, we are intentionally building a culturally responsive track specifically for Native American youth participants. Our goal is to ensure that this portion of the curriculum is guided by Native voices and grounded in cultural strengths. We believe that connecting youth with their cultural identity, traditional teachings, and community leadership can serve as a powerful motivator for positive change and long-term resilience. The Native cohort track is intended to include elements such as:• Tribal cultural identity building through story circles and values teachings
• Opportunities for traditional healing practices, where appropriate and requested by the community
• Indigenous leadership involvement and mentorship from respected community elders
• Education on historical trauma paired with resilience and strength-based mappingA core emphasis of the curriculum is reframing the concept of being a “protector.” Rather than associating protection with violence or self-defense through firearms, we aim to guide youth toward understanding protection as responsibility to family, community, and future generations. Restorative practices rooted in tribal teachings will be central to this approach.Given that American Indian/Alaska Native populations in South Dakota experience some of the highest firearm death rates nationally, and Native youth are disproportionately represented in youth gun violence statistics, we believe it is essential that this work be culturally informed and community-guided. For this reason, we are hoping to connect with a cultural liaison, tribal educator, or community partner who may be willing to help guide this effort or collaborate with us in shaping this component of the program. If you are able to assist, recommend someone, or point us toward the appropriate tribal resources or contacts, we would be very grateful.

Volunteer: Lunch Buddies Volunteer

Lunch Buddies Volunteer Program The Club for Boys is looking for caring, consistent adults to join our Lunch Buddies Program—a simple but powerful way to connect with the boys we serve.

As a Lunch Buddy, you’ll come to the Club around noon and share a meal with one or a small group of boys (up to five). Volunteers are invited to skip the lunch line and enjoy a meal while modeling healthy habits, encouraging boys to try new foods, and—most importantly—building meaningful connections. For many of our members, having an adult sit with them, ask about their day, and truly listen makes a lasting impact and helps them feel seen and valued.

Because we work directly with youth, all volunteers must complete a background check and onboarding process before participating. This helps us ensure a safe, supportive environment for every child.

If you’re someone who enjoys conversation, can show up consistently, and wants to make a difference in a young person’s day, we’d love to have you join us! We’re especially looking for volunteers who can come weekly or twice a week—it's a meaningful way to spend your lunch break.”

Volunteer: Laundry with Love

We hold LWL on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 3pm -7:00pm at The Laundromat Company located at 701 N. Cliff Ave. We invite anyone to come and do up to twelve loads of laundry for free per month. Quarters, detergent, dryer sheets, bleach and stain spray are provided. We serve a meal while we are there so people don't have to choose between feeding themselves and their families and getting their laundry done.

We ask our LWL partners to prepare (or buy) and serve a meal for about 150-200 people. We usually have around 70 people do laundry, but we feed their families and anyone in the neighborhood that stops by is welcome to eat a meal. We like to have 5-8 volunteers at a time and most groups have volunteers come in 2 shifts. If you arrive by 3:00 and are ready to serve food by 3:15 it works great. We do ask that if you decide to serve pork, that you also provide a non pork option such as PB&J for our Muslim guests. The laundromat has a small room with counter space, electrical outlets and a serving window, so crock pots and roasters can be used. Popular meals are sloppy joes, pizza, walking tacos, subs, and casseroles.

The volunteer duties are to serve the meal, help give out quarters for the dryers and bag the soap pods, give out clothing at the Undercover Closet, organize donations, sweep and clean up as needed, and assist with any other needs that might arise. We love to have someone to sit by the prayer box and simply encourage people to write down a prayer request or, if needed, write it for them. If you have a volunteer that is willing to run over to Breadsmith at 33rd and Duluth, we need someone to pick up a bread donation at 6:00 and bring it to the laundromat to distribute.

The cost of Laundry with Love is averaging about $850. Most, but not all of our volunteer groups collect quarters; however, there is no minimum amount needed to partner and we appreciate any amount!
