Become a Better Choices, Better Health®-South Dakota (BCBH-SD) Lay Leader
Are you passionate about helping others improve their health and well-being? SDSU Extension is seeking volunteers to become trained Better Choices, Better Health®-SD Lay Leaders.
Lay Leaders facilitate evidence-based self-management workshops that help individuals living with chronic conditions gain the skills, confidence, and support needed to better manage their health. No healthcare background is required—just a desire to help others and a willingness to learn.
As a BCBH-SD Lay Leader, you will:
- Complete a Lay Leader training program.
- Facilitate workshops in your community or virtually alongside a co-leader.
- Support participants in setting goals, problem-solving, and building healthy habits.
- Help improve the health and quality of life of South Dakotans living with chronic conditions.
Requirements:
- Attend and successfully complete Lay Leader training.
- Facilitate your first workshop within one year of completing training.
- Complete at least one workshop per calendar year to remain active.
- Be comfortable working with diverse groups of adults.
- Demonstrate good communication and leadership skills.
Time Commitment:
- Initial training (virtual or in-person options available based on interest and location).
- Approximately 2-2.5 hours per workshop session, once per week for six weeks. *Then become eligible to facilitate 1-hour workshops in-person or virtually or hold 30-minute weekly phone toolkit workshops.
- Additional time for preparation and communication with participants.
