Opportunities From: Helpline Center Volunteer Connections

Who: Outgoing Pavilion volunteers 16 and older who enjoy engaging with guests, especially kiddos

What: Leading interactive, STEAM (Science, Technology, Education, Arts, and Math)-focused activities. Plans and supplies will be provided by the Pavilion's Education office 

Where: The Jack's Imagination Lab inside the Kirby Science Discovery Center and/or the Children's Studio inside the Visual Arts Center - the venue is up to you!

When: Times on weekends are flexible. Ideally, we would love for volunteers to join us for a three-hour session at the following times:

- Between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm on Saturdays

- Between 12:00 and 5:00 pm on Sundays

Volunteers can join us on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis as their schedules allow

Training: Some part-time staff members already lead STEAM-focused museum activities on weekends and would be happy to provide interested volunteers with some guidance ahead of their debuts, if needed

Who: Requesting outgoing volunteers 18+ who enjoy public speaking and presenting in front of large groups

What: Serve as a live presenter during presentations of "The Global Soundscapes Show (check out a trailer here)." The show focuses on the new field of soundscape ecology, aligns with curriculum standards, and plays well with families and school groups. Volunteers are invited to serve as interactive hosts during showings of this film - script, props, and plenty of training provided

Where: Presentations will take place in the Wells Fargo CineDome & Sweetman Planetarium inside the Kirby Science Discovery Center

When: Exact times TBD, but there will be a consistent schedule of "Soundscapes" this spring during workweek hours (presentations of "Soundscapes" may happen, say, every Tuesday and Thursday at 11:00 and 1:00 between mid-April and early June) - stay tuned!

Why: "Soundscapes" will be a great way to utilize the capabilities of the CineDome and enrich the museum experiences of Pavilion field trip guests this spring

Training: The Museums staff will lead a training session on Monday, March 9 from 1:30-3:00 pm

Requesting Spotlight Theatre Company Volunteers

Who: Requesting volunteers 13+ who enjoy theatre and/or working with area youth

What: Assist the Spotlight Theatre Company, the Washington Pavilion’s in-house youth theatre program, in putting on its multiple fully staged productions each year. Volunteers can assist in the following capacities:

 - Costumes/Props/Set Construction
 - Painting
 - Rehearsal assistance
 - Backstage supervision

Where: At the Washington Pavilion and Orpheum Theater, both in downtown Sioux Falls

When: Volunteer commitments are seasonal and the production staff offers flexible scheduling

Why: Volunteers play a critical role in bringing Spotlight’s inclusive, high-quality productions to life

Requesting Visual Arts Center Greeters & Guides

Who: Requesting volunteers 16 and older
What: Serving as a Visual Arts Center (VAC) Entrance Desk Greeter and leading tours of the galleries as requested by guests and/or scheduled by groups visiting the museum

Where: At the VAC entrance desk inside the Washington Pavilion

Training: Plenty of training provided by Museums staff and fellow volunteers - no prior art expertise necessary!
When: Volunteers usually serve on a set day of the week for a three-hour session between the museum hours of 10:00 am and 5:00 pm.

Why: Museum guests appreciate a friendly face and welcoming presence upon their arrival at the VAC. Volunteer-led tours of the exhibits on display are often the favorite part of guests' visits to the Pavilion!

Requesting Performance Ushers

Who: Requesting friendly volunteers 14 and older who are comfortable with stairs, dark spaces, reading tickets, standing for periods of time, and operating ticket scanners

What: Serving as an usher for Washington Pavilion performances, including Broadway shows, the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, big-name artists, local group performances, comedians, and more!

Where: At the Washington Pavilion and Orpheum Theater, both in downtown Sioux Falls

When: Ushers serve on a season-by-season basis. The Pavilion staff loves to have volunteers join them for at least three performances each month

Why: Ushers play a critical role in maximizing the Pavilion guest experience and provide invaluable services by taking tickets, assisting guests to their seats, answering questions, and creating a pleasant and welcoming environment for all. Ushers get to meet lots of new people and experience quality performances

Requesting Summer Camp Volunteers

Who: Requesting volunteers 13 and older

What: Volunteering as a Pavilion camps assistant, acting as the camp instructor's second set of eyes, ears, and helping hands for the 90+ art-, science-, and performing arts-focused camps the Pavilion hosts each summer

Where: Camps happen in various locations inside the Washington Pavilion

When: Camps are one-week offerings (two-week runs for music theatre camps) Monday-Thursday from 8:30 am-12:00 pm and/or 1:00-4:30 pm between early June and early August. Volunteers are asked to sign up and be present for each day of a camp

Why: Volunteers get to explore the many exciting areas of art, science, and theatre while serving as a positive role model and mentor to younger peers

Requesting Kirby Science Discovery Center (KSDC) Volunteers

Who: Requesting volunteers 13 and older
What: Volunteering in the KSDC. Volunteers can:

- Oversee the floors, clean/sanitize exhibits & surfaces as needed, and make sure exhibits are looking good and working well

- Lead fun activities for children and families  in the Jack’s Imagination Lab and the Children's Studio (inside the Visual Arts Center)

Plenty of on-site training provided by Pavilion Museums staff!
Where: In and around the KSDC, located inside the Pavilion
When: Times are flexible. Volunteers often serve once or twice per week in three-hour sessions between the museum hours of 10:00 am and 5:00 pm Tuesday through Sunday
Why: Volunteers help provide first-class museum experiences for the 120,000 guests who annually visit the KSDC

Requesting Field Trip Volunteers

Who: Requesting volunteers 16+ with good mobility who enjoy working with elementary- and middle school-aged students in large groups

What: Assist the Pavilion's Museum staff in hosting educational field trips for area students. Volunteers can serve in the following capacities:

- As Field Trip Assistants: greet students, their teachers, and chaperones upon arrival, distribute itineraries, direct groups to their destinations, and help move sack lunches (with rolling Pavilion bins) to the 3rd-floor lobby

- As Museum Floor Volunteers: supervise the Science Center floors, reset exhibits, answer questions from groups, and direct groups to the locations of their next stops during their visits

Where: In and around the Pavilion’s museums and lobbies

When: 9:00 am-12:00 pm and/or 11:00-2:00 pm on weekdays in April and May. Volunteers may be scheduled on a certain day or days of the week or on an as-needed basis when the Pavilion knows it will be hosting lots of groups

Why: Volunteers help provide first-class experiences for the thousands of students who visit the Pavilion on field trips each spring

Requesting Building Tour Guides
Who: Requesting friendly, outgoing volunteers ages 16+ with good mobility who enjoy history and public speaking
What: Leading tours of the Washington Pavilion, which is housed in the beautifully renovated former Washington High School. Tour itineraries and topics adjust depending on the audience, be that Washington High School alumni, local students, or visitors to Sioux Falls
Where: Inside the Washington Pavilion, especially its performance spaces and museums
When: Tours are scheduled through the Pavilion's sales office. Volunteers are requested to lead tours based on when groups schedule their visit
Why: The building is the site of "Old Washington High," which educated tens of thousands of Sioux Falls families for nearly a century and is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Building tour guides help ensure the legacy and bring to life the history of this one-of-a-kind facility!

Requesting "Street Team" Poster Delivery Volunteers
Who: Requesting volunteers ages 16+
What: Delivering posters to area business to promote upcoming Pavilion events & concerts
Where: Various locations around downtown Sioux Falls
When: Street Team volunteers are welcome to drop off posters at their businesses in a timely manner when it’s convenient for them. Volunteers receive notice when new posters are ready to deliver, which usually happens about once or twice per month
Why: Street Team volunteers have the satisfaction of promoting the Pavilion programs and get to familiarize themselves with downtown Sioux Falls businesses
Bonus: For every 10 hours of Street Team service, volunteers are eligible to receive complimentary/discounted tickets to a Pavilion-hosted performance (some restrictions apply)
