Since 2015, Lutheran Social Services has brought older adults ages 60 and up together with trained volunteers. The LSS Better Together program matches older adults with volunteers in Minnehaha, Lincoln and Brookings counties. This program is part of our independent adult services and helps to establish trusting relationships and regular social opportunities between older adults who live on their own and LSS volunteers.

Friends of the Big Sioux River offers companies and organizations an opportunity to be directly involved in cleaning up the banks of our local streams and rivers. If your business or group is interested in donating time to help clean up a stretch of a waterway, FBSR will help to locate a site in need and provide the clean-up materials. Volunteers must be 18 years of age

Help make mealtimes more welcoming and enjoyable for our members. This volunteer opportunity is available Monday through Friday from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM. Choose the days that work best for you. Tasks include carrying food to tables, clearing dishes, and connecting with others through friendly conversation. It's a simple way to make a meaningful impact.

Every Thursday, we deliver 40-50 food boxes for Feeding Brookings. Driver needs assistance in handling/delivery of food boxes to individuals who cannot make it to the food pickup site.

Our woodshop volunteers help repair, restore, and occasionally build furniture to ensure donated items are safe, clean, and ready for distribution. Tasks may include sanding, gluing, painting, tightening hardware, or basic woodworking. This role is ideal for individuals comfortable with tools and hands-on work. Volunteers work independently or alongside others in a dedicated shop space, contributing directly to the quality of items given to families in need. Truck Volunteers help with the pick-up and delivery of furniture across the community. This includes collecting donated items from households and delivering furniture to individuals and families in need. Volunteers may serve as drivers (with a valid driver’s license) or passengers, working together to load and unload items safely. Want to make a difference in someone's life through teaching?

Caminando Juntos, a Hispanic Ministry Center in Sioux Falls, is seeking patient, friendly, and compassionate individuals willing to tutor English Language Learners 1:1.

Volunteers would set their own schedules and arrange tutoring times and locations with his/her assigned student; tutors should be available to tutor 2 hours per week. Daytime and evening tutor times are available.

Tutors will receive ongoing training and support, as well as teaching materials to make their job easy and rewarding. Tutors should be open to working with diverse cultures and would preferably have some teaching and/or tutoring experience, although teaching experience is not required. Knowledge of Spanish is helpful.

1:1 English classes run year round. A volunteer orientation and screening session is required and a commitment of three months minimum is preferred.

Want to make a difference in someone's life through teaching English language learners?

Caminando Juntos, a Hispanic Ministry Center in Sioux Falls, is seeking patient, friendly, and compassionate individuals to serve as classroom teaching assistants in our adult English classes.

Volunteers should be available to assist one evening per week in our group classes. Teaching assistants will work in cooperation with the classroom teacher to provide extra support and assistance to students (model pronunciation, practice speaking, help clarify, give examples, answer questions, etc.).

Volunteers receive ongoing training and support to make their job easy and rewarding. Volunteers should be open to working with diverse cultures. An intermediate level of Spanish is desired.

English classes run twice per year (fall and spring) and last 10 weeks. A volunteer orientation and screening session is required and a commitment of one semester.

The What, When, and Where
The Church on the Street Health and Healing event will be held on Saturday, January 31st, 2026 from 1:00-3:00 at the Multi-Cultural Center (515 N Main Ave, Sioux Falls). This annual event is a day of pampering for people living without homes or in poverty. Haircuts, manicures, makeup applications, blood pressure checks, dental screenings, balloon animals, face painting, food, and more will all be free! Faith Through Frames will be there, giving all guests free portraits.

Favorite Meals or Restaurants We all like casseroles. Cowboy casserole, Tator tot hotdish, lasagna, spaghetti, mexican lasagna, tacos/ walking tacos, and loaded baked potatoes to name a few.

Special Instructions They are big eaters and like leftovers for lunch pail the next day. There are 2 ovens to use as well. We arrive at 4:00 if you would like to do any meal prep at church, then we like everyone to worship with us from 5:00-6:15ish before coming back into the kitchen after the service to serve the meal. We have had some generous donations of different meats (inventory always changing), if you would like to use this in your meal you are making, please coordinate with Ruth getting access to this meat. Also we have had a very generous bakery donate desserts for us to use every week.

Join us as a Black Hills Reads Community Engager and help make a lasting impact on children's literacy! Volunteers in this flexible role support a variety of hands-on and community-based projects, including sorting, cleaning, packing, and delivering books for kids, judging writing contests, assisting with outreach events, and hosting booths at local resource fairs and events. We provide all the materials and training needed. Whether you're available to volunteer once or on a regular basis, there's a way for you to get involved and help promote a love of reading in local kids.

Host Families are volunteers who are willing to open their homes to kiddos whose parents are facing temporary crisis.   These families are needed year round, with an average length of stay being around 36 days.  Please note placements can be much shorter or longer depending upon the situation.  Host families are required to go through an application and training process.  This process helps to prepare host families for different experiences and also give us, Bethany, the opportunity to discover the host families openness to age, gender, etc.  Thank you for considering volunteering your time and opening your home to kiddos who need you.  This is an amazing way to serve our community!

The Road To Recovery Volunteer Driver provides people with transportation to and from their cancer-related medical appointments. Drivers donate their time to help people with cancer get the lifesaving treatments they need.

Time Requirement

• Volunteers choose the rides that work best for their schedule. Most rides are scheduled during the weekday between 7am and 7pm.

• The American Cancer Society asks volunteers to commit to a minimum of 2 rides per month.

Volunteer groups from organizations, churches, and businesses, or family and friends are needed to sponsor and provide workers for each weekly food distribution.  Distributions happen from 6-7 pm on Thursdays. Volunteers come early on the Thursday they are scheduled to help to be trained by the Food to You coordinator, set up the area, unload and arrange items, and interact with guests as they conduct the distribution. 

Here is what is needed from each group:

4-5 volunteers to be at the site by 4:15pm to help with set up and stay through and help with the distribution, usually done before 8:00pm

15-18 volunteers to be at the site by 5:15pm, including some who are able to lift and carry boxes. All volunteers should be high school aged or older, middle school aged children may volunteer with adult supervision.

A sponsorship donation of $450 to cover the expense of the food purchased from the Feeding SD as well as the cost of the truck and driver for that evening.

Bring the food of the month; suggested to have been collected for a few weeks prior to serving.

Borderlands Horse Sanctuary is run completely by volunteers and is always in need of dedicated volunteers for a wide range of tasks (both hands-on and online). Basic hands-on volunteering includes feeding and watering along with cleaning stalls and pens. Once you’ve volunteered for awhile, you’ll progress to grooming and hand walking horses for exercise. The Children's Connection Assistant will: Assist support groups for school-aged children who have or have had an incarcerated family member. The support groups will meet in elementary and middle schools during school hours. Provide information and assist in presentations about Children's Connection to the school counselors and teachers. At Feeding South Dakota, our volunteers and staff come together to distribute boxes and bags of food to our neighbors during Mobile Distributions. This essential program helps us support around 12,000 families across the state each month. We are seeking a volunteer to help with the guest registration process, which includes entering or updating guest information on a tablet and checking in guests for the distribution.

Our hardworking Tuesday/Thursday construction crew needs a meal on April 25th! The individual who originally signed up is unavailable, leaving our crew without a meal that day. If you enjoy welcoming and interacting with guests and can donate at least 2 hours per week between 8 AM and 4 PM Monday through Thursday, you can serve as our receptionist. Airport greeters meet and welcome wish families at the airport, help departing wish families with check in and security or assist arriving wish families with baggage and locate their pre-arranged limousine or rental car; greeters also welcome families home from their trip by supporting them with their baggage and locating their ground transportation. These volunteers help to ease any concerns the wish family has about navigating the airport and airline travel. The ultimate goal is to ensure the wish family is comfortable and stress-free as they begin or end their wish experience.

Create special touches that help turn a wish into a life-changing experience - be a wish booster! We are looking for volunteers to support travel needs for wish kids who fly out of Rapid City by (1) decorating their hotel room and/or (2) creating airport greet signs for their departures and returns.

Our virtual visit volunteers are young adults who participate in video visits with seniors every week on our online platform. Each week, they return to meet with the same senior to share stories about what is going on in their lives. We’re looking for outgoing, chatty volunteers who can commit to one hour visits each week on the same day and time, for a minimum of 16 weeks. The goal of these visits is to create intergenerational relationships between senior citizens and young college students.

Looking to help SHIFT Sioux Falls? It takes all kinds of people to make SHIFT run smoothly. Whether you love working on cars, talking to people, or doing office work we can find a place for you here! We perform mostly minor repairs, brakes, oil changes, belt changes, etc. We also perform many suspension repairs that are bolt-off, bolt-on style repairs. We don't go inside the engine or touch the transmission. SHIFT is a great place to learn and no experience is required to join in!

Keep Clean Downtown Brookings is a volunteer effort to remove litter in the Downtown Brookings neighborhood. Downtown Brookings works with various groups and individuals looking to volunteer during the spring, summer, and fall months (as weather and volunteer participation allows). Anyone can volunteer, including all ages and groups sizes, during most daylight hours, seven days a week. All supplies and instructions will be provided at the event - just bring yourself and a friend or two!

Volunteers must complete a waiver before volunteering. Waivers will be sent ahead of time or can be completed onsite. If under 18, parents must sign the waiver and an adult must accompany them during cleanup.

Community Mentoring matches volunteer mentors with children ages 7 to 14 who meet outside of school in the community. Matches are supported by the LSS Community Mentorng Program Coordinators who works to ensure a successful experience for all.

Children can start meeting with a Community mentor after they turn 7 years old, and must be under the age of 14 to enroll as a new participant. Established matches can continue to meet after the child turns 14.

Community matches meet for four hours per month with dates, times and the activity of each meeting set by the match. To help with this, LSS provides an activity card that offers discounts to program participants and hosts monthly events that all matches are invited to attend.

LifeScape will have the sewing instructions and all the supplies, we just need your sewing skills to create and adapt to specific needs.

The Furniture Mission is a faith-based organization providing gently used furniture to those in need free of charge. We also pick-up donations of furniture. We are seeking a warehouse volunteer who is comfortable loading furniture for families onsite. When an appointment arrives, they pick out their needed items and we load their trucks. Volunteers will be trained on moving furniture and use of equipment dollies for easier transporting. A comfortable home provides dignity, security and a better environment in which to raise a family. Project Warm-Up began making blankets for local homeless children in 2006. Since that time, over 40,000 blankets have been given to children experiencing homelessness, in foster care, lost their homes due to fire/flood/tornado, dealing with the loss of a parent, fighting serious illnesses, and more!

Donations of fleece, funds, and/or blankets are accepted any school day, 7:30-4:30 at Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School, 1510 S Lake Avenue.

Rescue Squad: The Rescue Squad is called to assist Rural Fire with their firefighting efforts and conduct search and rescue operations. This team operates and maintains specialized vehicles and equipment used to respond to these types of calls. The Rescue Squad meets and trains monthly. Dive Team: The Dive Team meets and trains to conduct searches underwater in low visibility situations. There are monthly meetings and numerous training opportunities. The office of Minnehaha County Emergency Management is currently accepting applications for officers for the Minnehaha County Police Reserves.

Applicants must be of good moral character, have no criminal background, be a licensed driver with a good driver’s history, be at least 21 years of age, and be in good physical health.

The Minnehaha County Police Reserve Law Enforcement Unit currently consists of volunteer reserve law enforcement officers. The primary function of a reserve officer is to supplement and support career law enforcement officers. Reserve officers have participated in assisting at parades, Sioux Empire Fair, marathons, holiday patrol, street dances, community events, tournaments, and dignitary visits such as Presidential details.

Looking for compassionate people to join in the Alternatives to Violence Project at the South Dakota Penitentiary.

We offer weekend workshops and meetings with inmates, where we join them in exercises that teach and practice the principles of nonviolence.

Children's Home Society is seeking a group of volunteers to wash our outside windows at our new campus located at 5301 Mt Rushmore Rd.  All washing supplies are provided.  We are looking for this to be an ongoing project and will work with any individual or group on the best day and time to have this project completed.

The Salvation Army's Women's Auxiliary group is actively seeking new members. Women who have a passion to see their community changed for the better, who desire to support families and children through their volunteer activities. Owen's Outfitters is a medical equipment lending library in Sioux Falls whose mission is to provide durable and disposable medical equipment at no charge to those who need it most, sourced through community donations. 
Servers truly are the heart of Owen’s Outfitters. They meet and greet clients, assist with orders, process lending paperwork, and track item requests. They also process and organize donations, stock and manage inventory, and maintain our storefront so it’s always clean and tidy. We are looking for regular volunteers who can provide us with a minimum of four hours a month to work as Servers.
Servers often come to us with prior experience in the medical industry or knowledge of medical equipment and supplies. Although this kind of background can be helpful to get you up and running quickly, it’s certainly not essential for the role. At Feeding South Dakota, our volunteers and staff come together to distribute boxes and bags of food to our neighbors during Mobile Distributions. This essential program helps us support around 12,000 families across the state each month. We are seeking a volunteer to help with the guest registration process, which includes entering or updating guest information on a tablet and checking in guests for the distribution.
