Volunteer: Sioux Falls: Pack Food - Help Feed South Dakota (2026)

Make a Difference: Join Our Food Bank Family

Are you ready to help us tackle hunger in our community? Join us at our distribution center and play a key role in ensuring South Dakota families have the nourishment they need to reach their fullest potential.

What You'll Do:

Your tasks may vary, but they’re all about putting food on the table! Shifts last up to 2 hours and may include:

BackPack Program
Help us pack nutritious food for kids in Sioux Falls! Work alongside fellow volunteers in an assembly line—some packing while others restock supplies. Together, we’ll make sure kids have the fuel they need to learn and grow.

Food Box Packing
Get involved in packing food boxes for our local seniors or for mobile distributions that support families. It’s a great way to connect with others while making a real impact in your community.

Bulk Food Processing
Join us in our bulk food room, where we take larger quantities and turn them into family-sized portions, including bulk produce.

Food Sorting and Quality Assurance

As a volunteer, you’ll play a crucial role in sorting food donations or produce  to ensure they are safe for distribution. You’ll also help categorize items, making sure everything is ready for our school and wellness pantries.

Support and Training:

Please arrive at least 5 minutes early and dress in comfy layers with enclosed shoes. We’ll give you the scoop on your tasks and provide support throughout your shift.

Who Can Volunteer:

Must be able to stand and walk for 1-2 hours. Able to lift at least 5 pounds. All abilities are welcome! If you need accommodations, reach out to us at info@feedingsouthdakota.org. A waiver must be signed before volunteering. If you’re under 18, don’t forget to have a parent or guardian sign it.

Age Requirements:

For safety, all volunteers must be 11 years or older, and those under 14 should bring a parent or guardian to help out.

Grab Your Crew!

Volunteering is better with friends, family, or coworkers. If you’re signing up as a group, please use the "respond as a team" feature.

If you need to cancel, just call 605-335-0364 or email info@feedingsouthdakota.org.

Volunteer: Literacy Allies

Description:
We are seeking dedicated adults to serve as Literacy Allies, a vital role focused on accelerating foundational
reading skills for our youngest learners. In this position, you will work in our schools with small groups of
kindergarten and first-grade students, delivering purposeful, intentional practice that is strictly aligned with the
University of Florida Literacy Initiative (UFLI) framework. To ensure your success, you will collaborate closely with  our District Literacy Coach for ongoing instructional guidance, training, and logistical support. By investing your  time and professional skills, you will provide the targeted, high-quality support our youngest learners need to  build a lifetime of literacy success.

Weekly Time Slots
The initial pilot program will serve three elementary schools, each with its own unique scheduling windows to
accommodate student needs. Because routines are vital for our classrooms, we ask that all Literacy Allies
review the timeframes at the link below and select the building, the day of the week, and the one-hour time slot
that best fits their professional availability to maintain consistency week after week. You will receive a follow-up
email in early August.

Key Commitment & Requirements

Professional Training: Complete a mandatory, comprehensive four hours of training, one hour each
week during the month of September. Multiple training days and time options will be provided. These
options will be sent to you in early August. Weekly Sessions: All Literacy Allies will commit to one hour every other week during the 2026-27
school year working with students inside our schools.  Individuals: Each individual will be paired with others to serve a small group of students and will be expected to commit to one hour every other week (including commute time

Team of Allies: A team of six Literacy Allies can partner and commit to cover three hours per
week, two twenty-minute sessions with five minutes between sessions.

Each volunteer for this program is considered an “Unsupervised Volunteer” as you will work with students
without a teacher directly present. Due to that, we must complete a background check. The following link will
take you to the site where you can complete the information to have a check done. You will need to sign up for
an account using an email address and password you will create: bit.ly/sfsdvolunteerbc

Training Schedule
To prepare you for success in the classroom, there will be mandatory, comprehensive professional learning for
all Literacy Allies throughout September. While detailed scheduling information will be shared in early August,
our current vision for this training is an interactive, four-week series where allies attend a single one-hour session
each week in September. We plan to maximize this hour by splitting it into three high-impact segments that
allow for questions and answers at the school sites.

Together you'll spend time doing everyday activities like grabbing coffee, taking a walk, attending a community event, playing games, working on puzzles, exploring local attractions, or simply enjoying good conversation.

You don't need any special experience—just kindness, patience, and a willingness to connect. We'll provide guidance and support to help you build a meaningful friendship.

Volunteer commitment:

Flexible scheduleJust 2 - 4 hours per monthActivities based on your shared interestsOngoing support from Black Hills Works

A few hours of your time can help someone feel more connected, confident, and included in our community. And chances are, you'll leave each visit smiling too.

Volunteer: Pack Food Boxes

Feeding Brookings does a food distribution every Thursday afternoon. We pass out around 400 boxes every week to households who could use them, feeding a total of over 1000 people each week. Boxes contain bread, eggs, meat, vouchers for milk, and other items that are purchased or donated.

Every Thursday, we need a group of volunteers to help us pack boxes of food, starting at 2pm. The main job is to pull a wagon and fill the boxes with food, then bring the box outside to stack on a pallet. We also need some volunteers to pass out the boxes to guests outside. Guests drive up between 3pm and 5pm to get a box.
Please sign up on this Sign up Genius: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0f49aeaa2fa57-volunteers#/
. We couldn't do this every week without volunteers! It is a large weekly operation, moving a lot of food to a lot of households, done entirely by volunteers.

If you have a question about how we work and how you can help us, please email Bill Alsaker at alsakerwilliam@gmail.com.

Volunteer: Foster Home for Animals

Our fostering needs have changed a bit since we were a completely foster based rescue. Most of our “adoptable animals” do well in our shelter environment so we no longer send them to foster homes. It’s much easier to facilitate adoptions when they stay in shelter. Our foster program has shifted to care for animals that need a bit more round the clock care than can be provided during staffed hours at the shelter. These animals include:bottle/slurry/gruel aged kittens and puppies, special medical needs animals, Senior animals that need a little more TLC, special behavioral needs animals that are not thriving in shelter.

Volunteer: Laundry with Love

We hold LWL on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 3pm -7:00pm at The Laundromat Company located at 701 N. Cliff Ave. We invite anyone to come and do up to twelve loads of laundry for free per month. Quarters, detergent, dryer sheets, bleach and stain spray are provided. We serve a meal while we are there so people don't have to choose between feeding themselves and their families and getting their laundry done.

The schedule for most of 2026 is already filled with volunteer groups, but we are taking reservations for groups in 2027 and many dates are available.

We ask our LWL partners to prepare (or buy) and serve a meal for about 150-200 people. We usually have around 70 people do laundry, but we feed their families and anyone in the neighborhood that stops by is welcome to eat a meal. We like to have 5-8 volunteers at a time and most groups have volunteers come in 2 shifts. If you arrive by 3:00 and are ready to serve food by 3:15 it works great. We do ask that if you decide to serve pork, that you also provide a non pork option such as PB&J for our Muslim guests. The laundromat has a small room with counter space, electrical outlets and a serving window, so crock pots and roasters can be used. Popular meals are sloppy joes, pizza, walking tacos, subs, and casseroles.

The volunteer duties are to serve the meal, help give out quarters for the dryers and bag the soap pods, give out clothing at the Undercover Closet, organize donations, sweep and clean up as needed, and assist with any other needs that might arise. We love to have someone to sit by the prayer box and simply encourage people to write down a prayer request or, if needed, write it for them. If you have a volunteer that is willing to run over to Breadsmith at 33rd and Duluth, we need someone to pick up a bread donation at 6:00 and bring it to the laundromat to distribute.

The cost of Laundry with Love is averaging about $850. Most, but not all of our volunteer groups collect quarters; however, there is no minimum amount needed to partner and we appreciate any amount!
