Yankton Area Arts

Yankton Area Arts is a community-rooted nonprofit dedicated to the belief that the arts belong to everyone. We are the people, programs, and preserved spaces that keep creativity alive in Yankton and the surrounding region—and we've been doing it for decades. Our mission. We exist to educate, advocate, and enrich Yankton by integrating the arts into the life of the community. Through visual arts, music, education, and celebration, we work to make the arts accessible to every neighbor, regardless of age, background, or means. Our home. We are the stewards of the historic G.A.R. Hall, a Grand Army of the Republic building raised by Union veterans of the Civil War in 1887. Entrusted to Yankton Area Arts in 1999, the Hall has been carefully preserved and reimagined as a gallery, a classroom, and a gathering place—a living landmark where the community's past and its creative future meet. Our people. We're a lean organization that does a lot with a little. A small professional staff keeps the doors open and the programs running, guided by a volunteer board of directors and supported by the many volunteers, artists, musicians, and members who give their time and talent to make our work possible. When you support Yankton Area Arts, you join that community. What we believe. We believe art education is essential to a full and thriving community. We believe access to the arts shouldn't depend on what you can afford, which is why so much of what we offer is free and open to the public. And we believe a small organization, backed by a committed community, can leave a lasting mark on the place it calls home.

Yankton Area Arts exists to educate, advocate, and enrich Yankton by integrating the arts into everyday community life. From our home in the historic G.A.R. Hall, we make art happen across visual arts, music, and more—keeping the arts free, accessible, and woven into the life of the region. Our free art gallery. The G.A.R. Hall Art Gallery hosts a rotating schedule of exhibits featuring local and regional artists working in every medium. Admission is always free, and each exhibit is paired with an artist reception where the community can meet the makers and hear about their work firsthand. Live music all summer. Our Summer Concert Series brings free concerts to the community, including performances by the volunteer Yankton Area Summer Band, drawing hundreds of neighbors together for the arts at no cost. Signature community events. Each August we host the Summer Arts Festival during Riverboat Days, showcasing dozens of artists. And every December, the gallery transforms into The Crimson Door, a pop-up boutique full of one-of-a-kind, handmade work from local and regional artists. A preserved landmark. We're proud stewards of the G.A.R. Hall, a Civil War–era building that we maintain as both a gallery and a gathering place—available to rent for receptions, meetings, and celebrations.
