Who We Are
Pennington County, located in western South Dakota, is a government entity serving more than 115,000 residents and is the second most populous county in the state. Its county seat is Rapid City, and the region was originally created by the Dakota Territorial Legislature in 1875 and fully organized in 1877. The County government oversees a range of services and functions that support public health, safety, infrastructure, and community well-being for all residents.

The mission of Pennington Country, SD is to provide quality public services, as determined by law and citizen needs, through innovative leadership and the teamwork of its people, officials and employees. Services shall be provided in a fair, respectful and professional manner consistent with available human, natural and economic resources.
